He cursed-a rare action for him, but certainly one the situation warranted. I fell asleep. Worse, he had fallen asleep at the same time as Evelyn. He remained very still, listening for the sound he did not want to hear. It didn't come, and he allowed himself to relax infinitesimally as he prepared to stand up. It was tempting to simply lay back on the soft grass and wait to fall into a true sleep, but he needed to stay alert. As long as he was in a lucid dream, there was a chance it would find him-or worse, find Evelyn. He straightened as he took in his surroundings, snapping his tail. Evelyn's dreams were beautiful. As previously, he was in a field of tall, springy grass that appeared nearly blue under the pale light. Unlike the last one, this time there was a moon, making everything just a bit brighter, more silver than blue. A large school of fish was silhouetted against it as they swam up through the sky like slow moving birds. So far, there wasn't any hint of darkness polluting the peaceful false night.

Evelyn and Az live Below, a world of non humans that has no outside—just room after illogically connected room. There's a tea room connected to an office hallway connected to an Olympic-size swimming pool connected to a waiting room & so on.

In ch 19, Evelyn is challenged to find her way back...
"This sucks," Evelyn declared to the empty room. The red wallpaper decorating the walls did not agree or disagree with her. She let out a hefty sigh and dropped herself onto the bed in the middle of the room, scowling up at the round, frosted ceiling light. It also did not offer an opinion. This was, if she had counted correctly-and she was fairly sure she hadn't-the two hundred and fiftieth room she'd entered, and it was another dead end. The closet door only led to an empty closet, and the single-hung window, as all windows she'd encountered, only showed a wall a few inches away. She'd tried to open it to find that it simply didn't; it was like a sculpture of a window without any moving parts. Even the locks didn't turn. By now, that was something she'd expected. She'd started out methodically down the hotel hallway. She opened the first door on her left, and ventured through a normal looking hotel bedroom to the room beyond-an empty industrial kitchen without any food, and silent appliances that didn't turn on when she poked the buttons-to the room beyond that-some form of photography studio without a camera in sight-and beyond that, a classroom, with neat rows of desks and a wall of wide windows looking out onto a blank concrete wall a few inches away. They were the first ones she'd tried to open, but the cranks didn't even turn. She gave up with a shiver, an unsettled feeling growing in her. Before she knew it, she was four unique rooms deep and had hit a dead end in a walk-in closet filled with spiked heels a dead end in a walk-in closet filled with spiked heels and vibrant pantsuits with large shoulder pads. It felt almost like its owner had just left. She had the ridiculous feeling that if she lingered too long, they would return and scream at her for invading their personal space. So she hurried back, re-searching the rooms for exits she might have missed. She even tried a few cupboards to make sure that they didn't lead anywhere with no luck. Finally, she found herself back into the hotel hallway, and tried the next door. The next set followed a similar pattern, with a children's playroom that looked to be from decades ago, to a sitting room that was surely from centuries ago, to a room with cold stone walls that felt more like a crypt from millennia ago than anything else. That impression was proven correct when she walked down a set of unevenly carved stairs and found a stone sarcophagus on a platform. She'd felt relieved when she realized there was no chance in hell of her moving the lid, and thus it was unlikely that C had decided that counted as a door too and had hidden an exit there. Unlikely, but not impossible, based on C's constantly-changing logic, which was something she really didn't want to think too hard on. She already had 'stabbing Az' as a nearly impossible goal to reach; thinking of C also setting her up to fail gave fuel to the rage deep inside that she preferred to suppress.

Az, a tall male demon, leans over a desk. In front of him is some neat "writing" Next to him is Evelyn, a short human woman disguised with horns and a tail. In front of her is messy writing. Threads (Below) ArchangelMacaron Summary: Chronically ill Evelyn is in the process of dying-literally-when a shadowy stranger appears to offer her a second chance at life. There's a catch, however, and Evelyn finds herself not enjoying a fresh start as a healthy, average human, but living Below, a mysterious world of interconnected rooms populated by fantastical creatures-some with a taste for human flesh. The stranger who brought her there is a fashionable yet stoic demon librarian who calls himself Asmodeus, and it's not clear what exactly he wants with her. While Az, as she quickly nicknames him, works hard as a translator, he sends her to spend time learning with his estranged and unpredictable teacher, C, and her sweet and strong wife Susu. As she learns to work her new body, Evelyn begins a plot to get back to the human world of Above. But even as she struggles to understand Below in general and Az specifically, she's surprised to discover just how much she enjoys her new life-and her compulsory companion. She slowly begins to untangle who Az really is, but it's not easy-especially when something from his past is hunting them both!
