Got a rare brief clearance in the clouds in the early hours and took a few quick snaps of the Moon in the third quarter phase and of Jupiter and its four moons. Happy science week!

If you have time to spare the IAS are exhibiting some magnificent astronomical photographs at the visitor centre in the Phoenix Park. irishastrosoc.ie/event/ias-as.... We are delighted to be showcasing the talent of Irish astrophotographers. The exhibit will run throughout November.

1860’s - Dunmanway, Cork, Jeremiah Collins left for the US. A drummer boy in the civil war he eventually married and his son James became an army major. Serving in Rome, Jame’s son Michael is born who went on to pilot Apollo 11 to the Moon. Michael Collins was born on this day 1930.

Delighted and honoured to have presented a lecture on the Grubb Telescope Company to our Northern Ireland sister society the IAA at Queens University Belfast tonight. John McClintock, president of the IAA and his fellow committee members gave me a great welcome.

I was very honoured to receive my medal of office tonight as President of the Irish Astronomical Society from past president Mick McCreary. As a society we have big plans to bring the joys of astronomy to more and more people. I’m looking forward to the adventures ahead

Hot day here in Gran Canaria and here’s the culprit. You can see spots on the Sun’s surface indicating violent magnetic activity. How big are the spots? For scale I have included images of the inner planets, they are the tiny dots that the arrows are pointing at! That’s how big!

The Owl nebula is a dead white dwarf star, surrounded by its own outer layers expanding away.  It is 2005 light years away. This is the fate of our Sun in 5 billion years. themoon.ie

If the sky is clear tomorrow don’t miss the partial solar eclipse. Over 40% of the Sun will be blocked by the Moon. Starts at 10am. Peaks at 11 am. DON’T LOOK AT THE SUN DIRECTLY. Go to themoon.ie for all you need to know! Keep looking up.

There will be a lunar eclipse in the early hours of March 14th and a partial Solar eclipse on March 29th. I have an info pack on the way…watch this space. For now enjoy the beauty of last night’s waxing crescent moon.

Spent a great morning in the company of the boys from St Micheal’s NS Trim discussing all things planetary. They were brilliant and so inquisitive. Times may be rough at the moment but the future holds great hope. Keep looking up.
