I feel like this is what happens a lot. It’s about what expectations you set about yourself. The Dems set expectations that they’re the “adults in the room.” The GOP set expectations that they’re childish assholes. So when they behave like childish assholes, nobody blinks.

I stand by the premise that SC only wins if they aggressively cheat - either on recruitment or on performance. I believe their lines are juiced, which is why their QBs always are perennial Heisman contenders that do fuck all in the NFL.

I'm a Cal fan, so I'm happy we finally canned Wilcox.

The difference with Breaking Bad S1 is it starts ‘in medias res’ with Walt in his tighty-whities in the desert with a gun. So if nothing else, it’s an intriguing mystery to unravel in spite of the slow burn.

Yes. Vince Gilligan’s storytelling is often an enticing narrative wrapped in a very slow burn.

It definitely is. I wish she did more of this at the FTC with trade law writ large; then she would’ve gotten less mired in anti-trust suits that were doomed from the start.

It’s quite incredible how much better the refereeing quality is when you’re not watching the EPL! I had forgotten what competent refereeing looks like.

About time. Now Rice is safe from suspension.
November 4, 2025 at 7:29 PM
Right? I’d love the clean sheet but not at the cost of Rice getting another yellow.

I mean, an aristocracy is literally the physical incarnation of Wilhoit's Law.

It feels more nervy because Slavia are coming out more aggressive offensively. At the same time, we've also got a "hot hand" bias going on with our current win/clean sheet streak.

Ahem - that is Night Monkey.

On that aspect, you’re absolutely correct. The notion that you cannot deny coverage for a “preexisting condition” was a horrific component of pre-ACA insurance. I was moreso referring to the other aspects of the ACA that looked to expand consumer participation in insurance markets.
October 20, 2025 at 4:32 PM
To me, the ACA was the best market-based attempt at “solving” health care. The original premise for things like the individual mandate came from Heritage Foundation. The corollary of this is why the GOP & Trump have not come out with anything better - this IS it. And Obama took it, and they HATE it.
October 20, 2025 at 3:49 PM
If the choice is between ACA and nothing, the ACA is better than nothing.

If the choice is between ACA and a better healthcare delivery system writ large, the ACA is likely worse.

The ACA is, and always ways meant to be, a stepping stone towards something better.

There is also a complete imbalance of enforcement mechanisms available to each branch. Congress has impeachment, Executive has control of some law enforcement arms, and Supreme Court has virtually nothing.

Oh totally! We relate more to the people we can physically interact with over the faceless person on the phone - right, wrong, or indifferent.

They only say “ok” with Medicaid patients, because there are laws preventing balance billing Medicaid patients.

Otherwise, you’ll probably get a bill for the other $4,750.

Understandable. The danger in that is: when your doctor recommends surgery for a condition and an insurer says they don’t think it’s medically necessary, who’s right? I’ve had surgery recommendations that are legit (impacted wisdom teeth) and WAY out of left field (sprained wrist).

Nope. Same service.

For perspective, Medicare would pay between $105-$115 for this. But they base their pricing off of different magical pixie dust called Relative Value Units.

That’s the cool part: Yes! And/or No! Or, you’re worse off!

Yup. There’s also very much a desire to get vocal providers off their back. No insurer wants to be bad mouthed by the provider community - which is what makes UHC’s very public breakup with Johns Hopkins so unusual and fascinating.
October 7, 2025 at 3:24 PM
Eg.: Person A says a 50-min new patient office visit with moderate complexity should cost $250. Person B says it costs $5,000.

How much should this service actually cost?

Turns out they’re both simultaneously right and wrong!
October 7, 2025 at 3:14 PM
Pricing is a universal problem because healthcare is a credence good, which are often difficult both pre- and post-purchase to gauge how much utility you’ve got. And it’s very multifaceted - drugs, equipment, surg, etc.

How much is one unit of healthcare worth? What IS one unit of healthcare?
