Even after adjusting for demographics & treatments, young adults had lower recovery rates & were more likely to deteriorate.

If outcomes were equal across age groups, 23,000 more young adults would have recovered over four years.

So how can services do better?

Are NHS Talking Therapies failing young adults?

A new study analysed data from 1.5 million people treated for anxiety or depression in England. It found that outcomes were consistently worse for 16–24 year olds, compared with adults aged 25-65.

We have now reached the end of the #DigitalYouth conference!

A huge thank you to everyone who ran the event 😄

There are some really valuable projects going on and I can't wait to see what we can achieve next... 🥳

Cathy wraps up by reminding us of the keys to successfully bringing digital interventions from research to practice

An inspiring talk and we can learn a lot from the success of OSI!

“Aim for better, not just cheaper” - something thats really important to keep in mind when scaling digital interventions💰

A well-thought-out intervention might have higher initialcosts, but will lead to savings down the line when implemented in services

The next step in moving interventions from research to practice? Evaluate them in the real world🌍

Cathy’s advice to researchers? Once in the real world, keep testing, listening, and improving. Scaling doesn’t mean stopping evaluation📊

We want these interventions to make clinicians jobs easier. They should result in less admin & easy outcome tracking.

One clinician said that with OSI “I can book more cases & be more flexible.”

Any clinicians reading, do you find digital interventions make your job easier? #DigitalYouth

Cathy says that successful digital interventions must meet clinicians, parents & young people where they are - not expect them to adapt to the tech.

Simple & flexible interventions work best. Parents loved being able to “do a module while washing dishes” or “log in at midnight.”  #DigitalYouth

Prof Cathy Creswell (@cathycreswell.bsky.social) from University of Oxford is delivering her keynote on ‘Taking digital interventions for youth from research to practice’

How can we learn from the success of OSI (Online Support & Intervention for Children)?

Prof Ed Watkins has worked to develop several effective digital interventions 📱

But, the process of these interventions getting to those who need them can stall, when research funding runs out before commercialisation and implementation can happen 📊

This afternoon we’ll focus on moving research to implementation. In other words “bridging the valley of death”.

First up we have a panel discussion with Prof Chris Hollis, Prof Ed Watkins, Robert Higginson, Barnaby Perks and Dr Aaron Kandola #DigitalYouth

Scientists are afraid of false positives – e.g. saying a technology causes harm when it doesn't.

The fear could delay intervention, leaving harms unaddressed.

Do we focus on accurate evidence or quick intervention? 🤔We would love to read your thoughts in the comments! #DigitalYouth

💡Solution 3 - We can shorten evidence thresholds. This is known as the ‘Minimum Viable Evidence’ model.

Remember the 4-stage model? We can overlap stages and have a minimum threshold for evidence at stage 2 before starting stage 3.

This will leave more time for stages 3 and 4 #DigitalYouth
November 13, 2025 at 12:23 PM
💡Solution 2 - We can also speed up the gathering of evidence by asking better questions.

Professor Orben has provided an example from her research, asking the question - “What makes social media different?” #DigitalYouth
November 13, 2025 at 12:20 PM
Professor Orben has just explained a 4-step model for the generation of evidence by science and policy makers.

However, there is a problem! ⚠️This model is slow and cannot keep up with the speed of technology. #DigitalYouth

💡Solution 3 - We can shorten evidence thresholds. This is the ‘Minimum Viable Evidence’ model.

Remember the 4-stage model? This is how it looks if we overlap stages.

There can be a minimum evidence threshold to achieve at stage 2 before starting stage 3, leaving more time #DigitalYouth
