I don’t subscribe to the belief that @abcnewsbot.bsky.social is biased. But headlines like this don’t help. Who says democracy needs saving?

Surely we can do better?

Another much needed regional housing initiative - better than another block of apartments.

But what about the government and community services that create a viable community.

More proof we need a national decentralisation plan.

Australia ranks 14th globally in average GDP. We are one of the richest countries on the planet. But ‘average’ masks the fact that in such a prosperous nation we have a huge disparity in wealth and income. Redressing that imbalance is the challenge and the best way to increase real wage levels.

IMO, they are too high, too close together (balconies with no sunlight) and we are condemning people who’d prefer a house to a life in an apartment.

From the prospectus…

“introduce a 2% affordable housing requirement to the site…”.

Seven out of 277! Developers 1, people 0.

We are in the middle of nowhere on the NSW South Coast rail line. There’s zero mobile phone coverage. If a train came off the rails, or some other accident occurred, someone would have to hike out of here. People could die waiting for help

And there you have it, the cancerous efforts of the property sector - at a time when housing affordability is a national issue.

Let’s encourage outsiders to scoop up spare housing stock in regional centres and jack up the rent to offset their investment loan. Great!

It’s now a case of ABC - any bank but the Commonwealth! Why do we allow our essential service industries to subcontract vital systems management to foreign controlled enterprises?

Americans live in 300+ cities. Few are as big as Hobart! Which is why their homes cost around half the price we pay in our major capital cities…

Talk about arrogance! Why do we bother with local councillors if they have no say in how councils are run?

Really looking forward to this session.

So, how many of the one percent of us with more than three million in super invest in risky startups?
August 19, 2025 at 12:37 AM
Four million homes have solar panels. People have invested millions of dollars in renewable energy only to be gouged by the power companies. Now down to four cents when they take your excess electricity. Around 30 cents when they sell to you. It’s time to regulate the market.

It’s time to explain what is a welcome to country. It’s pretty simple. “Country” in this context means where I come from (or my place). It’s a long established greeting to people from another geographical area. It is not, as some seem to think, a welcome to Australia!

Negotiating 101. Meet on your turf. Trump wants to make Albanese come to the White House so he can dominate the exchange.

Halfway between Canberra and Sydney on the main east coast highway. No mobile signal! What of you break down or have an accident?

Bureaucracy wins. Change looses. Musk’s desire to cut government spending was largely ideological, but whatever his motivation he’s discovered that elected officials (and their offsides) are no match for entrenched bureaucracies. The same challenge many an Australian politician has encountered.
