After winning in 1860, Lincoln appointed a cabinet filled with his “rivals.” Among those were people who ran against him for the nomination(Seward, Chase, Bates), and others who he had negative interactions with in the past( I.e. Stanton). Despite their differences, he chose them for their abilities
