Beer and pubs
Finishing of the first German leg of our holiday with my final 2 beers. A @jonnygarrett.bsky.social @craftbeerchannel.bsky.social favourite, Andechs. I was slightly disappointed, a bit too light and watery 🫣 maybe I’ve developed a taste for the Export/Specials, which the Teggers certainly delivered.

Made it to a great ‘stand-up’ bar in Munich from Giesinger Brau. Fantastic spot to watch the world (in their Leder) go by!

Holiday beers 17 & 18 (I think, Munich got a little hazy).
Bayreuther Ur Stoff and Tegernsee Export. Think DAB for comparison. Both enjoyed after a day at Tegernsee.

Guess the City I’m drinking in?!

Holiday beers 7 & 8 - Tucher Hell and Rotes of Nuremberg.

A refreshing Hell with a distinct sweetness. Great for washing down a Nuremberg bratwurst.

The Rotes - unfiltered, cloudy verging on murky. Probably better on draft?

Holiday beer 6 - Landwehr-Brau Hell. A perfect accompaniment to a snowball after a day in Rothenburg od der Tauber.

Holiday beer 5 - Rothaus Pils.

Highly regarded pils from the Black Forest brewery. Started with a herbal nose, sharp clean bitterness but towards the end a strong alcohol taste. 😕

Holiday beer 4 - Eifelbrau Helles. A landbier by Bitburger. Supposedly cloudier than a traditional Helles, but it was clear to me. Malty, chewy with low bitterness. Enjoyed after a day in Schwabisch Hall.

Holiday beers 2 & 3.
Pils and Export by Park Brauerei, a brewery you’ve probably never heard of, from a SW German town you needn’t visit!
A refreshing pils with a distinct floral nose. Softly carbonated, low bitterness. The Export has a little more body with the late hops dialled back. Enjoyable!

Holiday beer number 1 - Bitburger Pils.
Yeah I know, it’s easily obtained at home but I am in the region it was brewed. And I love the cool crisp and dry bitterness with herby floral notes. Perfect to slake one’s thirst after a hot day!

BEST PUBS. The Boat Inn, Penallt. Wye Valley beers and Tayto crisps!
May 28, 2025 at 8:13 PM
The Pelican Inn, Gloucester. A Wye Valley pub and fine Butty Bach.

Stand out pint being Blue Sky Drinking by Arbor Ales. And not forgetting the Sam Smith’s Circus Bar. Still £6.10 for the stout though!

Ticking off a good few pubs in Cheltenham last night…

It’s all about the Bass… I could be converted! A fine pint in The Navigation, Shardlow.

The Pele in Corbridge, Northumberland.
Probably the most characterful ‘micro’ you’ll visit.
Grade 1 listed, built in 1300AD as a fortified vicarage, now serving real ale from First & Last as well as cocktails, wine and teas and coffees.

Another Hawick delight. The Exchange Bar (Dalton’s). Traditional Scottish style bar, wood panelling, ornate coving, cask ale from Born and 80s soundtrack.
April 19, 2025 at 6:11 AM
Asked if I want a handled dimple glass, swapped out a bad pint with no quibble- that’s beer service!
Oh and £3 a pint of cask on weekdays!
Queen’s Head, Hawick - a town I’d never heard of before.
Beers from First & Last, Tempest and Bowness.

The Perth Arms, Dunkeld. Don’t be fooled by the Carlsberg sign. A traditional local with real ale from Loch Lomond Brewery and local brewery Wasted Degrees. #realale #campaignforrealale #caskale

With views across the Tay, cosy bar area with fire and a fine selection of beers from WEST, Campervan and the neckable unfiltered Helles by @blackisle.bsky.social. The Taybank is a must visit in Dunkeld.

Why the need to slap the grey paint in pubs? The Phoenix Alehouse, Inverness has an interior of historic importance. It’s the only spittoon I’ve seen, but yet they paint the bar and walls grey! Add the red vinyl seat covers and it looks like a playboy bedspread from the 80s. Shameful decor.

Most northern pub in mainland Britain. The John O’Groats brewery. For a touristy destination, they’ve certainly done it right. Cosy bar in the oldest building in JOG and great tasting cask, The Boars American Pale and Merry Men IPA were both excellent form.
April 15, 2025 at 5:58 AM
The Ericht Alehouse, Blairgowrie. Superb community run pub championing local and not so local real ale breweries.

I like to make a point of NOT stopping at services/roadside cafes, but ever since the article in @pelliclemag.com The Horn has been on my bucket list. Best bacon roll ever. The decor is amazing, could be used in a Wes Anderson film. Thanks to Jemma Beedie.
