I hope this message finds you working to stop the deletion and/or blocking of access to data on government websites. I work for a nonprofit organization in the heart of Appalachia as a public health researcher/epidemiologist. As a public health professional, I both contribute and access data from the CDC, HRSA, SAMHSA, Census, and NIH. Since January 20th, data has slowly disappeared from these sites, and today, it was a full-on assault on freedom of information. As a US citizen who has contributed to the tax base for well over 30 years, these data belong to me and every other person doing the same. Removing our access is the same as robbing us of our Constitutional rights. As a scientist and American, I want to know your plans to ensure your constituent's access is restored to these data. Data that informs federal allotments, congressional representatives, and electoral votes (Census); data that serves as the foundation for scientific discovery, allowing researchers to analyze, interpret, and build upon existing knowledge (NIH); data that serves as a critical tool for protecting public health, where scientists, policymakers, and healthcare professionals monitor diseases, assess health risks, and implement effective interventions (CDC); and these are only a sampling of how these data serve the people of the US. I cannot impress upon you the importance of this issue. When access to information is stifled, advancement is hindered, and the very foundation of evidence-based policymaking, public health, and scientific innovation is weakened. I urge you to take immediate action to restore full and unfettered access to these essential government databases and prevent further suppression of public information. The integrity of our democracy and the progress of scientific research depends on transparency and accessibility. Please let me know how you plan to address this urgent matter. I appreciate your time and your commitment to upholding the rights of your constituents.
