Yeah, that was a massive public health blunder to essentially lie to the public about the importance of masking, because of a shortage of N95s, and then backtrack later and urge masking when supplies were up. Ruined a lot of public trust in health officials, and that will take decades to fix.

There's also the unfortunate possibility that it will evolve to be more virulent instead, as smallpox did. The Delta variant was more severe than the original Wuhan strain or Alpha variant, so there's precedent.

The misconception started with the media saying coronaviruses cause colds, even though it's only a small percentage of "colds," and they tend to be worse than usual. COVID-19 should eventually become another cold like OC43 (believed to have caused the "Russian flu" pandemic), but it's not there yet.

Something with measles that rarely gets discussed is the strong effect of viral dose. Outbreaks can have a fatality rate over 20% in virgin communities, because family members of the sick get exposed to very high doses. Without prior immunity, these high doses translate to much more severe illness.
