Shira Lurie (she/her) is an Associate Professor of United States History at Saint Mary’s University and the Special Series Editor for the “Road to 250” series for Made by History at TIME Magazine. Lurie’s research focuses on popular politics, protest, the meaning of democracy. Her book, The American Liberty Pole: Popular Politics and the Struggle for Democracy in the Early Republic (UVA Press, 2023), explores how Americans used protest symbols and grassroots organization to contest the limits of political legitimacy in the new nation. In her Fall ‘25 JER article, “William Bonham’s Republic: Defining Politics in the Whiskey Rebellion,” Lurie examines how neighbors in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, clashed over what political participation should look like under a republican government, and whether the methods of revolutionary-era dissent still had a place.

Meet the Author tile for Jacqueline Beatty - "Jacqueline Beatty teaches early American, women’s and gender, and public history at York College of Pennsylvania. She also consults with public history organizations like Revolutionary Spaces and the York History Center. Her first book, In Dependence: Women and the Patriarchal State in Revolutionary America (NYU Press, 2023), shows how women in Boston, Philadelphia, and Charleston used their legal and social dependency to negotiate power and challenge patriarchal systems. Beatty is currently working on two new projects: Twenty-Five Women Who Shaped the American Revolution (Routledge) and Engendering Orientalism in the Empire of Liberty. In her Fall ‘25 JER article, “Rethinking the Gender of Politics,” Beatty urges a recentering of women’s activism in the Early Republic, challenging the idea that politics was inherently masculine and calling for a more inclusive framework for political history.

"Teaching the EAR: Call for Submissions With the academic year at a close, this is a good time to reflect on pedagogy, lesson plans, and student engagement. What has worked well in your classroom in the last year (or what could have gone better)? We welcome submissions that reflect on any element of your classroom experience teaching the history of the United States from the Revolution through the Civil War. Contributions could include reviews of texts and sources; example lesson plans or discussion questions derived from a specific source; discussion of student reception; ruminations on how resources impact your pedagogy; or much-needed advice on how to handle the challenges of Al. "Visit the Early Republic Tracker" "Keep History Accessible!" The Early Republic Tracker is now live! The #JERPano is launching a public initiative to document efforts to erase or distort historical interpretation at national sites, museums, websites, and other public venues. We invite academic historians, public historians, federal workers, teachers, and concerned citizens to submit evidence of changes to the Early American historical record on the Panorama. The Tracker serves as a record and tool for historical accountability. We will respect requests for anonymity.
