Just and Beneficent Ruler of the Universe. Please take me as seriously as my title deserves.
Thanks for the heads-up. Not a great photo, but first time Mary has seen aurora at all.

This cup plant bloomed late and now droops and fades in the early November cold snap.

The march down Washington Avenue went on for blocks and blocks and blocks. #NoKings

In other news, I am reasonably adequate furniture for cats.

My native plants are largely past their blooming phase. Now they provide food and shelter for various wildlife, including this cardinal and white-throated sparrow.

Visited the MN Arboretum this morning. Trees are just short of peak fall colors, but there were some lovely views. Also popped over to the apple house to pick up some fresh Honeycrisps.

I was out at the MN Arboretum this morning. I think you’ll like this petunia.

Wandered out to the deck, glanced across the driveway and was struck by this display of Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis) and Short’s Aster (Symphyotrichum shortii). (With a bit of Early Meadowrue (Thalictrum dioicum) in front.)

Spent the afternoon with my friend Jeff. We walked out into the Lost Valley Prairie Scientific and Natural Area. Lovely to be surrounded by tall grass, sumac, goldenrod, and asters. Here’s Jeff walking in what he calls his favorite place.

Sitting on my deck, enjoying the new @scalzi.com book and the mild temps. Out of the nearby box elder comes a Cooper’s Hawk (I think; @birdchick.bsky.social?), who is now just hanging out across the yard.

New iPhone delivered, and so the traditional first photo of a cat. Just in time for #Caaturday.

Headed out to a coffee shop (Gingko on Snelling) to listen to friends making music. And it’s Chas’s birthday!

Having coffee on the deck this morning. The Clematis virginiana (Virgin's Bower) planted this spring is now reaching (after an unfortunate incident with a groundhog) the top of the pergola. I expect it will be faster when it returns next year.

Grady approves of the new chairs. #caturday

Big-leaved Aster is starting to bloom. Right before I grabbed this photo, little wasps were grabbing pollen. Blooms from these plants will last into September, an important late-season food source for pollinators.

After the successful “Lawns to Legumes” garden tour yesterday, grabbed photos of current blooms in the yard. Bergamot, Joe Pye Weed, Wild Petunia, Cup Plant.

This morning a dragonfly takes a break on the bird-saver paracords in front of my picture window, making an intriguing shadow for the cat. (They’ve done this previously when the curtains are open too.)

Nice morning for coffee in the garden.

Further evidence that my yard is a Certified Wildlife Habitat: this recently-fledged young robin hanging out on a chair in our pergola.

Probably no one cares but me. But I play this game every day and the player that goes by AngryButter almost always has the high score. I usually aim to get 80% of their score on a good day.

A pleasant 75 degrees means taking the rest of the dinner beverage out to sit under the pergola.

Always love the distinctly alien look of the Early Meadowrue blossoms.

My native plants are ramping up their blooming. The Jacob’s Ladder has been blooming for a while. The Wild Geranium had a few early blooms, but is picking up. And the Wild Blue Phlox started blooming today.

A couple of years ago I got a “Lawns to Legumes” grant to expand the native plants in my yard. Part of that included some Virginia Bluebells that got treated rather roughly when we got a new driveway put in last year. But they are back up and blooming for the first time!
