Told ya

(Fun fact I never actually watched season 3 as it came out and only caught it in like high school. I spent years at the crossroads cliffhanger)

There's something really compelling to me about how Burnham's work perpetually tows this line between satirizing the thing and just doing it outright. Panderin' is maybe the finest example of it; you can't write that song without legitimately appreciating country music. (7/7)

Even hackneyed, dime-a-dozen expression is valid expression. Maybe we can just let people find meaning in their goddamned avocado toast sometimes. (6/?)

And when I hear that, it gives me a little more empathy towards the instagrammer. Why can't they appreciate a corny picture of a book or a salad? Why can't they find a picture of a glass of wine meaningful to them? Who am I to say that the "derivative" street art can't still affect them? (5/?)

But now, a couple years later, that verse does kind of get to me. It's sung with a heartfelt tone. It's cheesy, but that's sort of authentic? People really do use cliche to talk about real emotional. Wedding speeches and obituaries are not less genuine for their lack of original composition. (4/?)

The street art is "derivative," there's latte art and a dreamcatcher from Urban Outfitters. It's faux-deep and performative.

Halfway through the song, there's a verse describing a message to the instagrammer's late mother, full of cliche. It's the Urban Outfitters of dead mom messages. (3/?)

Originally, when listening to White Woman's Instagram, I read it as a sarcastic jab at the "instagram-ness" of culture- the instagram in question is cookie-cutter, we've all seen it before. It's one of a billion of the same thing. (2/?)

Is it so hard to believe that some people have contradictory thoughts they've absorbed from culture without fully interrogating them?

There's a good take on this that I'm gonna steal from InnuendoStudios' video "The Card Says Moops"- these two people are always fighting the left and never each other even though they seem to badly disagree. And every so often they WILL flip sides!

If "Somali people are evil garbage" doesn't cross the line between Republican and Democratic politics, what's even the point of democrats
