💡So what SHOULD a rebrand include?

✅ Brand Story & Strategy: start with WHY

✅ Audience Alignment: don’t alienate your core people

✅ Visual Evolution: keep familiarity while leveling up

✅ Name Clarity: make it memorable, not messy

✅ Thoughtful Rollout: HOW you reveal is just as important as WHAT

✨ 6. It lacks cohesive strategy.

There’s no clear narrative tying the shift together. It doesn’t *feel* like it was led by seasoned brand pros - quite the opposite, it feels sloppy & thoughtLESS...and the public’s reaction reflects that.

✨ 5. Confusing name associations.
MS=Microsoft? Multiple Sclerosis? Anyone but the news network you’re trying to be.

✨ 4. It’s giving NEWSMAX energy.
The patriotic color scheme and layout eerily resemble far-right outlets, and political signage. For MSNBC’s more left-leaning audience, not to mention un-biased journalism, that’s…concerning. Alienating, even.

✨ 2. The design feels cheap, dated & disjointed.
The logo looks like a political ad from ‘03. Where’s the intentional design? The strategy? The story?

✨ 3. Brand equity? Tossed out.
MSNBC had a clear vibe. MS NOW feels like an entirely different network - one many people aren’t sure they can trust.

✨ 1. It’s a total departure, not an evolution.

MSNBC has built years of trust and recognition - visually, conceptually, emotionally. It also benefits from the trust of the NBC partnership and brand caché. MS NOW doesn’t carry that legacy forward; it cuts it off at the knees.

So here’s a gentle practice I use with my clients (and myself!) when they are feeling like they've lost connection to that inner voice:

Try this: Hand on heart. Breathe.
Ask: “What message is my brand here to bring?”
Listen—not with your head, but your whole self.

Not what’s trendy.
What’s true.
