Over the last few weeks I've been working on a bioactive vivarium setup for a Pacman Frog. It's almost finished! Just have to let the cleanup crew settle in, and some minor modifications to regulate humidity and surface level substrate moisture. It's been fun!

My isopods and springtails continue to thrive here in the terrarium, but it's almost time for an upgrade. The one gallon jar has far exceeded its usefulness, and a proper tank would be significantly easier to add to - and paves the way for even bigger prospects.

Isopods consume decaying organic matter rich in cellulose (woos, leaves, etc.) but rely on symbiotic gut bacteria to help break it down. They rely on similar microbes to consume fungi and animal matter! They also share helpful bacteria through eating each others waste.

The common woodlouse, Porcellio scaber, is a terrestrial crustacean! They rely on moisture for their respiration and have psuedo-lungs akin to gills on the ventral side of their bodies. These modified pleopods are coated in a moist membrane that exchanges oxygen for carbon dioxide.

6 months ago I started a terrarium in a 1 gallon jar. It thrives today because of a population of springtails and woodlice. Routine watering, a heating mat, and a varied diet have contributed to the success of this beautiful snapshot of nature.
