In Chapter 6 of Beverly Hills Noir I recall a series of true crime stories I covered in the 90s & 2000s, linked by the theme of someone pretending to be something they weren’t. That felt a little like me in my early days reporting on Beverly Hills, agog at the mix of celebrities and the commonplace.

This has become an escalating trend. When a celebrity posts a throwback pic on social media - like this recent post by Rita Wilson of herself and Beyonce - a friend of mine notices the dingus standing in the background and messages me “This you?”

My action figure of the Wookie bounty hunter Black Krrsantan, in the retro style of the Star Wars toys of my youth, arrived this week. To explain why this makes me happy would be a disservice to my happiness.

I’m stunned to learn of the passing of the tremendous Broadway and TV actress Linda Lavin, best remembered from the sitcom “Alice.” I met her for the first time at the beginning of December and had the loveliest chat with her at the premiere of “No Good Deed.” (1/3)
