Mouse's #RiverAxeTopThree #Somerset. So which of the sixteen churches would Mouse recommend visiting? In at number one: #StJohnAxbridge. Church and town make a fine day out. More Perpy perfection. Crossing and vaulting are wonderful, but add ceilings, roof timbers and monuments
All the right words, not necessarily with the right photo....

Sanctuary...

South of south aisle. Churchyard #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset for #StandingCrossSunday

Fine C14 #StandingCross. Octagonal shaft with replacement head of crucifixion group, C15 style. Broached socket stone and top stage of calvary are more eroded than those below. Likely rebuilt

From nave #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset for #StoneworkSunday #SundayStonework

The day was grey and the interior felt somewhat gloomy at first but this is a church with strong visual appeal. Tall wave moulded pointed chancel arch with small moulded capitals neatly frames the altar

North aisle. West end of north elevation #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset for #StainedGlassSunday

It's refreshing to find some good modern stained glass. This was designed and made by a local artist to mark the millennium

Nave. North of chancel arch #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset for #SundaySermons

The pulpit doesn't bear a mention in the Listing but another source claims it is C14 or C15 (probably because of the cusped pointed arches). Mouse venture C19 or later

From chancel arch #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset

The panelling is C19 and it gives the chancel a typically Victorian look. It's both a very visually appealing and a spiritual space

Those screen doors do nothing for the visual appeal of the otherwise quite pretty little C15 porch of #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset. But it has nice diagonal buttresses with offsets so that makes up for it. Tomorrow Mouse (and you can all come too if you want) will PIFAP

The church of #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset for #SteepleSaturday

The earliest church comprised tower, nave and chancel. Subsequently a south aisle, transept and porch were added. Aisle and nave were lengthened later followed by a tower rebuild. Victorian organ chamber to north

Welcome to the church of St. Andrew in the village of Old Cleeve in Somerset set in this curious hinterland framed by distant hills. Predominantly C13 with C15 and C16 additions including the impressive tower. C19 restored chancel #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset #SteepleSaturday

The weather and the light meant that the photos of #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset probably didn't do the church justice. It means there are very few candidates, but the calm almost Old Master quality of this photo make it #MouseFavouritePhoto (though it should have been titled 'Sanctuary'. Mouse's bad)

And as #FontsMeanfarewell what of the church of #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset? This church is all about the tower with a strong visual appeal from outside. Some interesting interior features too notably Wyndham family memorials and screen. A high 4/5 from Mouse #MusVisit 🐭🐭🐭🐭

As sure as #FontsMeanFarewell, Mouse move on to the next church on the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast. The weather has taken a turn for the worse and if there's one thing Mouse hates it's getting her fur wet. It always goes frizzy like a tribble

The enduring allure of #ChurchDoorFittings...

Magnificent pull with rose nail fitted plate. Suggests the original C15 south door is still in use

#StDecumanWatchet #Somerset for #FerrousFriday

Interesting ones don't turn up that often, but this is rather fine. A #BootScraper with a frame to hang onto while you remove the dung from your walkers #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset for #FerrousFriday

(Framing a damaged #OSbenchmark on the buttress)

There's a certain steam punk quality to these #FridayPipes

Arch to north chapel #StDecumanwatchet #Somerset for #FridaysFacesInStone

This poor angel has lost an arm, a wing and half of his eek and riah (for those fond of Round the Horne). He's down to a wing and a prayer....

Angels with dirty face?

The fabulous carved angels on the underside of the font basin, #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset

It's amazing what you can repair with some B&Q patio tiles and some bathroom tile adhesive. The #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset font for #FontsOnFriday

Originally each face of this battered octagonal prism stem had two blind pointed windows each face separated by a pilaster buttress
November 14, 2025 at 9:54 PM
West of south aisle #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday

what Mouse can only really describe as 'a rather lovely goblet style C15 font' and so that's where she stopping (well until later maybe)

(Clutter here due to electrical work so all is forgiven)

North (Wyndham) chapel #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset for #LesArmoiriesDuVendredi

One of several rather fine crests on the chest tomb
November 14, 2025 at 3:40 PM
"Now brethren, this is an expensive chest and by my recknin' right delicate too"
"So tha be careful settling im down lest thee incur wrath of t' Lord"
"You at back with yer 'and up. Why tha lookin' so guilty?"

Not a candidate for #FridaysFacesInStone #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset

Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset. The bits and pieces Mouse didn't share in the week: It's estimated that only 10% of medieval crosses survive to the present day. A platoon of the 1st Mixed Cone Somersets has been deployed to guard this one

Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset. The bits and pieces Mouse didn't share in the week: Two #DullButWorthy photos from the same church Mouse? You spoil us. Unusually (well Mouse not seen before) the shaft of the #StandingCross has a modern wooden cross
