Third Doctor era, especially in the second half. His last story is partially set in a monastery and has strong Buddhist overtones. There's also Kinda, part of the fifth Doctor's first season, which has a lot of Buddhism scattered into the story.

I'm up to Battlefield in my long rewatch, and I'm shocked at how much worse it is than I remember. I didn't mind it before but now I'm finding your likening of it to Downtime wincingly apt. Some of the performances, most notably of the regulars, are embarrassing.

This is a brilliant novel. Steve Lyons, all his stuff was excellent. The Witch Hunters is one of my favourite pieces of Who extended universe work

I think you're thinking of the fifth Doctor, in Resurrection of the Daleks, and if you look closely he doesn't actually open fire when everyone else does. There are a few other examples though, most notoriously the third Doctor takes a ready gun and shoots an Ogron in Day of the Daleks.
