Lastly, I think any player, SS or otherwise, would have to admit, after gaining experience, that they were better for it. There will be, at the very least, a learning curve you wouldn’t need to worry about if you just found an experienced 1B.

Perhaps. For myself, every time I played 3rd or short, not too many, I felt like I was playing left handed (I’m a righty). For me, changing sides of the infield doesn’t help.
January 20, 2026 at 4:45 PM
Okay. I’m not going to argue.

Being aware of something and developing judgment from trial and error are two very different things. I promise you this is true. I have played thousands of innings at first.

First base is much more difficult than the average fan realizes. Footwork is complicated. Tweeners between pitcher and 2B cannot be taught, you HAVE to learn through experience. Throws into the runner…lots of situations other position players don’t need to know.

The talk casually includes moving Mayer to 2B. Is THAT coming from the Red Sox???
January 19, 2026 at 3:40 PM
Sounds legit. Where is the talk coming from that Boston is interested in Baty?
January 19, 2026 at 3:33 PM
And where do you see Bellinger is staying with the yanks?
January 18, 2026 at 11:54 PM
Baty is not a hang up for me. Sox will actually require another solid asset to move Duran. I’d 100% do it.
January 18, 2026 at 11:53 PM
And those are good bats to go with the gloves.
January 18, 2026 at 10:24 PM
Let’s say we sign Bellinger for 1B and trade for Duran for LF. I think we are much much better defensively then. Very achievable.
January 18, 2026 at 10:23 PM
I have to be honest. While I loved Diaz and know we’d be better with him, I’m tired of gimmicks while losing. So, the trumpets and Hells Bells and OMG signs…let’s earn those celebrations. Until we do, win games, act like you did it before, and come back tomorrow and do it again.
January 18, 2026 at 7:50 PM
Bichette will be better than Baty at 3B. Semien will be better than the carousel we had last year. First base and LF to be determined.

They let him walk before they had a way. They bet they could throw silly numbers at Tucker and that nobody would outbid them and Tucker is arguably a much better player.
January 16, 2026 at 5:02 PM
Is being willing to pay $55mm to Tucker not a plan? Was he totally unjustified in relying on him to sign for that and for no other team to match?
January 16, 2026 at 5:00 PM
We have young arms coming up. It is imperative to put a team behind them that can make plays. Otherwise, they will get burned out. That goes for veterans too, but especially the kids.
January 13, 2026 at 11:39 PM
You know we traded Nimmo, right?
January 13, 2026 at 11:33 PM
Sorry. I guess I read a snarky tone that wasn’t intended. My bad. LGM
January 12, 2026 at 2:49 PM
You’re being petty and obnoxious. There have always been hit first, glove first and two way players.
January 12, 2026 at 2:19 PM
Haha. Are you forgetting we have more holes than in starting pitching. And not for nothing, better defense is better pitching.
January 12, 2026 at 2:07 PM
Would have been a great add before they traded for Semien. But not after.
January 12, 2026 at 12:09 AM
Bergman was a Mets primary target? To play what position?
January 11, 2026 at 8:52 PM
However, Bellinger is a two-way player, who fits the run-prevention strategy much better than Pete.
January 11, 2026 at 8:51 PM
In any case, when your stayed goal is improving run prevention, you can’t start playing guys out of position. Like if they trade for Ketel Marte and play him in center.
