2025 #6: Havoc by Christopher Bollen

A widow’s attempts to rebuild a sense of self & home in a luxury Egyptian hotel are disrupted by an 8 year old with heterochromia.

Thrillers aren’t my jam but this gets under your skin and ends strong. Must read for genre fans. Liked didn’t love.

First mistake I’ve ever caught in a published book. There is no such language as Czechoslovakian!

The Coin by Yasmin Zaher

Very strange and smart novel about the absurd ebbs and flows of a hyper clean Palestinian woman teaching in America. If that sounds good to you just jump in blind. I promise it’s good.

All The Sinners Bleed by SA Cosby.

Not a big thriller guy but this is intense, smart, and very well written. The story is intense, extremely dark, and deftly weaves racism, grief, trauma, and faith into what could have been a straight forward “catch a killer” type story.

The Book Censors Library by Bothayna Al-Essa

My Orwell super fan dad gave me this and it is fittingly Orwell worship! A dystopian novel about books, magination and the tension b/t resisting authoritarianism & protecting those you love. I liked it but it’s definitely for YA audiences. Great ending.

The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner

Finally got around to this one. It’s very vibey and a cool vibe. Didn’t love the first half but the last third is really good. Not for everyone and I didn’t love it but it’s definitely a cool book.

Orbits by Samantha Harvey

A worthy Booker Prize winner. Follow astronauts on the ISS for 24 hours. Brief and beautiful execution of a very cool concept that is smart and moving. Read it on a plane which was cool.

Big Swiss by Jen Beagin

I love this book. Beagin’s writing is sharp, (very) funny, and points an unhinged finger at the messy fluidity of whatever our lives are. Every few pages has a sentence or moment that had me beaming. It’s not for everyone but it was very much for me. 🐝🫏🥑

The Perfect Nanny by Leïla Slimani.

Short intense novel that uses the framework of a thriller to explore race, class, and family. The writing is tense, taut, and smart and canopied by an ever present dread. I liked it but it’s a tough book to recommend. Would pair well with Parasite.

Absolution by Jeff Vandermeeer

My first Southern Reach book. A vibey strange spyish plunge into trauma, memory, truth, trust, and the self. 25% sure I have a good grasp of what happened in this. looking forward to reading the rest of the series! Fuck!
