We have the line "Monkey King is the only original companion we know for sure is still alive." The wording of it feels purposeful. The show has also made a point that something is different about Ao Lie compared to the other companions. (I'll go into more detail in the alt for each picture)
In the scroll scene (Season 4 episode 7: Pitiful Creatures) Ao Lie is the first to appear to Wukong during the group confrontation with the ink curse thing and is the only one facing the opposite direction. Furthermore, Ao Lie appears to him alone while Bajie and Wujing appear together. I understand why that was the case for Tripitaka but it feels odd for it to happen with Ao Lie. The origami figure of Ao Lie is (to my knowledge) the only one of the origami figures that we actively see Wukong interacting with in the show. (Season 5 Episode 1) (The fact Ao Lie specifically was bent out of shape could either be foreshadowing to some kind of injury Ao Lie may receive in the show, or just a reference to when he got hurt in the book.) Mei herself is also a key part of this theory as she's the only one of the main cast who is a different gender from her ancestor AND she's the only one we can prove is biologically related to her ancestor. As Ao Lie is referred to as her "great great great times a thousand great grandfather" (similar to how they referenced Ao Lie's father, Ao Ji.) (It's possible that Pigsy and Sandy are related to their ancestors, but it's highly unlikely Tang is related to Tripitaka since... Y'know, the whole devoted Buddhist monk thing.) PLUS, her close relationship with MK could be similar to how Ao Lie and Wukong might've been. Overall, I feel like we definitely aren't done seeing him or at least references to him, as he did seem particularly close to Wukong and we haven't learned anything more about his sister.
