We can choose to mindfully and intentionally use tech daily in ways that feel less compulsive and more grounded in real life. And, most importantly, we can advocate for laws and regulations that hold Big Tech accountable to the harms their products cause.

But we are not powerless. There are privacy-first, ethically-minded alternatives to every one of these platforms, and we can choose to take our money and our attention there instead.

Include the millions of dollars Big Tech has spent on UX research and design, and it’s become obvious that keeping Americans perpetually online and hooked to brain-rot has become priority number one.

Meta is hardly alone; outdated laws, like the Section 230 of the Communications Act of 1996, have enabled these platforms to face little to no responsibility for harms caused by the content on their sites.

Over the years, however, Meta has 1) introduced algorithmic feeds that stifle real life connection and amplifies emotionally-charged messages that manipulate and misinform the public;

The symbiotic relationship we had with these companies is turning into a parasitic one. For example, with Meta, we tolerated what we viewed as minor loss of privacy aka targeted advertising and, in return, we were able to connect with friends & family, build online communities and share information.
