This is one of the least awful parts of a catalogue of shame and lawlessness from Trump's DOJ, but the sheer naked corruption of selling pardons might end up having the most resonance with the voting public.

A swing and a miss despite all the makings of a scabrous romp Chaucer would've enjoyed. Could've been The Crucible tripping balls in the throes of an ergot frenzy, but the storytelling falls flat and all you're really left with are the visuals. Ambitious, though, and to be commended for that.

Linklater clearly had *a lot* of fun crafting this love letter to Godard and his New Wave contemporaries and it's infectious. The film zips along and Marbeck plays the asshole / auteur to perfection. Go see it.

A gentle delight and a paean to those kind but awkward souls ploughing their sometimes lonely and often misunderstood furrows through life. Impossible not to root for Madec's Blandine as she navigates the chaos of Paris 2024 and reconnecting with a half-interested half-sister. Go see it.

A film about family, filmmaking, art and acting and the tradeoffs and damage caused when some of those are pursued at the expense of others. Sounds a qualified but deserved note of sympathy for all the selfish driven devils who sacrifice so much to achieve greatness. Often beautiful. Go see it.

Sketches its near-future fascism lightly but effectively. The elderly are the outgroup and are corralled in the "Colony" beyond a certain age. What begins as a last hurrah for Weinberg's heroine turns into an increasingly tripped-out search for escape. Engaging, but doesn't quite stick the landing.

A deliberately uncomfortable & disorienting study of postnatal depression & psychosis. Lawrence shifts effortlessly between relative normality, frustrated longing, coiled fury, blank disassociation & back again. Pattinson is solid as her bewildered & increasingly distant partner. Worth a watch.

Panahi pulls off a pretty remarkable mix of black comedy, absurdist plot twists, tender interludes and searing political / moral critique of both the Iranian regime and its often fractured and ineffective opposition. A deeply humanitarian work. Go see it.

You can stretch for a generous interpretation: slow-burning horror re. innocents trapped by poor choices and events beyond their control. It's not clear the film deserves this, though, and despite moments of genuine force and power, it's hard to recommend anyone else tries to decide for themselves.

Another gleefully dark and bonkers treat from Lanthimos. Stone leans into it with her usual fearless relish and Plemons excels in his best leading role to date. Go see it and enjoy the ride!

McCarthy conjures a remarkable sense of place in this rich and unsentimental hillbilly elegy. Much closer in tone to Suttree than the outright horror and depravity of Outer Dark or Child of God. Go read it.

A kindhearted study of dissolution both personal and professional. Linklater has Lorenz Hart talk his way into that good night and Hawke delivers a wry and impassioned commentary on the dying of artistic light, but always with an eye undimmed for beauty and his fascination with humanity intact.

GdT blandly frames an overripe production design and frequently insists on lighting it like Peter Jackson at his most mawkish. Elordi saves it, though, and his monster grounds the whole thing with a depth and emotional heft that stops you feeling robbed of the price of admission. Worth a watch.
