Encampment by @maggiehelwig.bsky.social is wonderful. A clear-eyed look at a broken system, yes. But also a rare honouring and centering of people on the margins. Helwig captures individuality and never caricatures. Beautiful and troubling and alive. Read it! @coachhousebooks.bsky.social

Among the greatest pleasures of my New Year book reorganization was getting all of our mass market paperbacks to fit on this cute lil shelf

It seems there is an inverse relationship between how much I love a book and how slowly I read it. This thin volume is taking forever. Pure luminous beauty!

Gornick's Goldman bio rules! Emma is irrepressible. From sweatshop worker to rabble-rousing Anarchist speaker. She runs a radical paper, takes lovers, is jailed, meets Kropotkin, becomes a nurse. Emma never sells out, advocating Anarchism to the end. Long live!

@ronb8s.bsky.social I'm fifty pages into The Cowards by Josef Skvorecky. Really enjoying it so far! Follows a jazz band in a small Czech town at the very end of WWII, before the Red Army arrives. Lots of youthful angst!

Dig this new Jeff Wall of someone flipping out down at the Legion.

Anyone finish this? Is it worth it? I've got 80 pp left but it's a coma delusion followed by a Coetzee-style essay about death. I think I'm out.

Up at 6:30 to go load Christmas trees on a truck in Ship Harbour. Why is this even a time?

Stumbled upon a mini exhibition of contemporary drawings from Kinngait (Cape Dorset) on the second floor of Dal's law school. Including these two stunners by Ningiukulu Teevee and Johnny Pootoogook. Please forgive the reflections of very '90s wall sconces!

It’s been great (re)connecting with people here. It may be Polyannaish in a time of disaster and suffering, but I feel lucky to be part of these worlds; readers, writers, booksellers. Folks moved by words. These communities are precious. Here we all are, in the same place at the same time. Amazing.

Heart full today! Spent the weekend helping at the local bookshop Steeple Green. I worked with owner Michael Lake at a bookstore in Montreal, now we both live in rural Nova Scotia. Nice reminder of how excited folks are about books! When they talk about their favourites their eyes twinkle. Magic!

Hello new followers!
Here is my beagle Shelmerdine. He snuggles, he screams, he zooms, he snoozes in the sun. He does something funny every day.
I write CNF, fiction, sometimes reviews, and teach when I can. Started in zines. I live in Nova Scotia, spent many years in Montreal & grew up in Ottawa.
