Today marks the 10 year anniversary since I've been writing about dance for Writing About Dance.

I get all smooshy reflecting on the importance of independent media platforms, dances encountered & an acknowledgement of Nicholas Minns (founder/editor). #DanceSky

"Participants were asked to vote in a poll, to indicate...if they felt the discussion represented a consensus position...or there were substantial gaps."

"Although there was broad consensus around the overall state of touring, there was a desire for other key points to be raised." #theatresky

It was a night of rituals, welcomes, ribbon cuttings and collective mark making as we circled the venue (based in a former church) with the bell tower ringing before entering the auditorium.

Their opening season inc. Oona Doherty, Marikiscrycrycry, Solène Weinacheter, Cree Barnett-Williams & more.

A little moment of UK dance history happened in Bristol last night.

Impermanence opened their new theatre - The Mount Without - with performances from Seeta Patel Dance, Mark Bruce Company, Owen Ridley-Demonick and Impermanence (who performed an homage to the late David Lynch). #dancesky

Changing Room (2017) feat. 79 caps and 12 appliqued hand embroidered jackets which you were able to wear within the gallery.

#There'sNoPlace by Jakkai Siributr really rewards close attention and digging into the details. His work 2018 was a revelation, chronicling the year across 12 panels.

Outworn by #JakkaiSiributr offers three textile wall hangings using Thai service worker's uniforms - which reflect on the increased unemployment cause by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This work - Airborne (Klongtoey) sees orange motorcycle taxi high-vis vests transformed into stitched masks. #ArtSky

1) The Jakkai Siributr exhibition at The Whitworth (closing 16/3/2025) is a stunner.

#There'sNoPlace creates lush, textural, narrative-rich handmade embroideries, quilts and textile installations in response to the religious, political & societal issues in Thailand, inc. this from his work 2018
January 22, 2025 at 10:54 AM
3) Time (from the Louder than Words series) sees Barbara Walker layering and collaging. This is her son, Solomon, and one of the many stop and search dockets that he received from West Midlands police.

#BeingHere is heading to @arnolfiniarts.bsky.social, Bristol (7 March - 25 May 2025). Go.
January 19, 2025 at 11:13 AM
2) It was so good to see her body of work as a whole - the accumulation of politics, formats, communities alongside the technical mastery.

This - All The King's Men - from the Shock and Awe series sees White soldiers embossed (& almost invisibled) whilst Black soldiers are surfaced via graphite.
January 19, 2025 at 11:13 AM
1) The #BarbaraWalker exhibition at The Whitworth (closing 26/1/25), Manchester is extraordinary.

It's unfathomable* that #BeingHere is the first survey of this brilliant artist. With 70+ works spanning different cycles of practice inc. this from Turner Prize nommed Burden of Proof.

WAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIILLLLLLLL.

What an experience at the Welland Wassail. It was time to wake the trees, feed the robins cider soaked toast at the mother tree and meet the green man.

Wassailing is about scaring away the evil spirits to ensure a good harvest of apples in autumn.

I felt like I was decomposing in my seat like Rekha. Rekhachitram felt loooooooong. A rudimentary police procedural with AI recreating a 73 year old Mammootty into his mid 30s heartthrob era as they attempt to blend fact/fiction & discover a murder on the 1985 film set of Kathodu Kathoram. #FilmSky

2025. More of this please.
Worms Head showing off AGAIN.

The Gower Peninsular was the first place in GB to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956...which is 70 years next year.

Plenty of satisfying hand scrambles to cross the tidal causeways and reach the top of the worm.

The Boy and The Heron, The Substance and Perfect Days are on the podium.

One of the things I'm loving about @bsky.app is discovering so many brilliant communities of interest who're sharing their knowledge. @cartivist.bsky.social posted this incredible illustrated map of London written on a glove, so if you're interested in maps or archives - follow Andrew.

Musical highlight of a recent trip to PAMS (Performing Arts Market in Seoul) was this concert - A Funky Night With Guardian Spirits by CHUDAHYE CHAGIS.

A psychedelic, funk, shamanic, Hip Hop band with a hugely charismatic lead singer.
