Thinking back on this. Disco Elysium is only made stronger by including voice acting in the director’s cut. But even then I’m not convinced it’s the voice acting itself that improves it and not the specific performance of the actors chosen which becomes a whole different conversation.

It’s an extremely common technique in manga. Picked a random One Piece chapter (ch.113 1999) and found an example pretty quickly. It’s cool and quite efficient.

The Metal Gear Solid games would be objectively worse without voice acting, but the takeaway here for me is that I’ve never run into a game with no voice acting where I wanted it, but I’ve run into many games that are made far worse by including it
