Question for the Ethicists out there...
Is anyone actually defending good old fashioned temporal dicounting; i.e. that we should care about sooner welfare/harm more than later?

Everyone I've read on this so far seems to endorse some other form of partiality that happens to have a temporal aspect.

This is utterly unacceptable...
If it comes out who these researchers are, they'll have some serious questions to answer.
The mods of r/ChangeMyView shared the sub was the subject of a study to test the persuasiveness of LLMs & that they didn't consent. There’s a lot that went wrong, so here’s a 🧵 unpacking it, along with some ideas for how to do research with online communities ethically. tinyurl.com/59tpt988

All philosophy books should be exactly 12 readable-in-a-week chapters long to facilitate easy semester planning.
If I somehow become rich, I will buy #OxfordUniversityPress and make this the law.

The most messed up thing about watching Daredevil is thinking how much better a mayor Kingpin is than Eric Adams!

Kingpin would never capitulate to ICE.
Kingpin takes on the police who are, both in and out of universe, corrupt.

Slightly spicy tactic from a game today 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Black has lots of good continuations but a knockout blow to win overwhelming material. Two-move sequence.

I want to teach an ethics class where all we do is sincerely debate AITA posts from Reddit.
All that can be learned about morality can be learned from AITA.

Genuine question for any US lawyers or people familiar with US law: How does Trump's sex/gender EO work for intersex people?

(Please tag anyone you think might be able to answer!)

The EO says “Male” means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the small reproductive cell.

Logical Consequence need not be Metaphysically Necessary.
Consider the connective "actuor": ∨_@.
This is a connective with the truth table of ∨ in the actual world but of & in every other possible world.

φ⊨(φ ∨_@ ψ)
But ◇φ⊭◇(φ ∨_@ ψ)

Actuor introduction is a valid but contingent inference rule.

Just the basic story is obviously hilarious, but the chef's kiss is supplied by the letter's appeal to the authority as a commentator on economics of, um, Andrew Lilico, than whom there is literally nobody less authoritative.

At the end of the film "Don't Look Up" there's a sequence where a billionaire utterly fails to save humanity because he knows how to bullshit to investors and politicians but doesn't know any science.

Maybe private sector involvement in space agencies isn't a good idea.

Honestly, my writing is just an act of undiagnosed ADHD...
Writing is an act of rebellion.
Writing is an act of creation.
Writing is an act of salvation.
Writing is an act of exploration.
Writing is an act of emotion.
Writing is an act of confession.
Writing is an act of speculation.
Writing is an act of reflection.
Keep writing.

One of my favourite superhero films is Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I realized something interesting about it today that I think is part of what makes it so good.

Most Super Hero films follow a 3-Act structure: Setup, Tension, Resolution

So I'm a little be politically obsessed at the moment with Javier Milei of Argentina.

Not because I necessarily agree with him, though I don't disagree with him to the extent that my general political alignment would suggest, but because of how he operates politically.

People often ask me what I think about the philosophical gourmet report (the most well-known ranking of philosophy departments). So, I thought it might be worthwhile to put together some thoughts on it.

tldr: They are on the whole negative, but I think some positives get overlooked.

I think I called this pretty well!
Predictions & initial thoughts for the World Chess Championship ♟️

Overall prediction: Gukesh wins in the classical, but not by an overwhelming margin. Maybe 8:6. More likely than not that both players win at least one game.

Today Gukesh is white and I predict a slightly combative draw.

I'm genuinely astonished that Re1 in Gukesh's Neo-Grünfeld is a novelty at high level play... The move looks so natural to me!
The whole center merely for the cost of a pawn? Sign me up!

I think, for me, the saddest thing about the Biden Pardon situation is thinking about the calculation going through Joe Biden's head.

I can see a thought process that goes rule of law is already dead in the US, the political impartiality of the judiciary is already over.
