"Last May, I was knocking doors where I live. An older woman cracked open her screen door and, as we talked with her about our NCGA candidates and the upcoming presidential election, she shared her personal stance against abortion, but her political opinion that no one should be limiting...

Swipe through to see why we're in this fight, Dispatchers—because every one of these reasons is personal, urgent, and true:
1️⃣…we have friends who struggle to afford insulin.
2️⃣…I grew up hearing that “girls don’t talk politics.”
3️⃣…the opposition & the oligarchy want us too tired to vote.

Justice Allison Riggs’ victory has us AMPED UP. Her win is about more than one seat on the NC Supreme Court. It’s proof that when we organize with care, courage, & conviction, we grow. It shows our capacity to defend democracy & build the better South we dream about. It’s proof: our movement works.

‘How’d 2 women who live halfway across NC team up?’, you might ask. Well! We met in the thick of the 2024 campaigns–let’s be real, in a group chat–bonded over NC politics, affordable housing, & astrology, & started dreaming. This pod is an extension of our dream for what a better South can be.

“Politics stayed personal when North Carolina politicians pushed a hateful, harmful, transphobic bathroom bill.

It didn’t have to affect me personally for me to fight it fiercely. Because politics is personal—always.” –Liz

“Politics turned personal when legislators tried to control my reproductive choices under the cover of “motorcycle safety” when I was in college. (Yep, really.)

I was young, just figuring out who I was. My freedom depended on having choices about my body, my future, my path.

“Politics became personal the moment someone tried to tell me where home was—and that home wasn’t where I lived, learned, and voted.
When the NCGA tried to block students from voting where we lived year-round, it meant a 3.5-hour drive to vote. That wasn't accidental—it was intentional....

Sometimes I feel like I carry two Souths inside me: the one I grew up in, and the one I’m helping build.

One taught me how to keep quiet in church, that church meant both hose and long skirts, sitting silent in the pews. It taught me how to cross my legs at the ankle.

Foxfire is more than a name—it’s a quiet glow rooted deep in Appalachian forests. It feels like magic. Resilience. Storytelling. In the ’70s, Foxfire was also a folk magazine, amplifying Southern youth voices & community wisdom.🌲🔥
