Friends of the Nations’ Libraries, or FNL, awards grants for acquisitions to regional and national archives, libraries and museums. www.fnl.org.uk.
Christopher de Hamel, expert in medieval manuscripts, gave a 'magnificent' lecture this week on the 13th-century Sarum Master Bible. The packed lecture was at @salisburycathedral.bsky.social, to which FNL donated the Bible last year. The Bible is on display in the Cathedral until 2nd November.

Then you won’t need to know ‘Of the vertues of cheese
used as a medicine’?

Thanks to @lulgalleries.bsky.social for the image.

A rather belated follow up.. Herschel Museum of Astronomy in Bath is dedicated to the achievements of the Herschels: not just distinguished astronomers but talented musicians. In 2022 we gave a grant to enable the museum to buy Caroline Herschel's manuscript autobiography.

Couldn't resist sharing this image, taken during the FNL visit to Senate House Library, of Euclid’s Elements, 1509, from the Augustus de Morgan Library - heavily annotated in Italian in an early hand. catalogue.libraries.london.ac.uk/record=b2804...

FNL members had a fantastic visit to Senate House Library
yesterday! So rewarding for members, whose subs allow us to give more acquisition grants, to see some of the rare books and manuscripts they helped to save, including 16thC cookery books & an 18thC conjurer's flip book!

In a reception @salisburycathedral.bsky.social athedral this week, the 13thC Sarum Master Bible was welcomed home to the city in which it was created nearly 800ya. It's an exquisite and early example of a 'portable Bible', just 17cm tall its parchment pages are as almost as fine as tissue paper.

An early Christmas present for Salisbury Cathedral!
@thefnl.bsky.social has donated the 13th-century Sarum Master Bible to the Cathedral following a successful campaign to raise £90,000 which was supported by many generous donors including 160+ members of the public. Happy Christmas!

Delighted that @thefnl.bsky.social was able award a grant towards this major acquisition. The St Andrews Chronicle comprises two separate manuscripts on paper, dating respectively to c. 1511 and c. 1526, bound together in a rare early Scottish binding.

In 1995 @thefnl.bsky.social gave a grant to Norfolk Record Office to help them buy the county's earliest known swan roll, c1500. Swans in Norfolk are clearly very fine, if a bit grumpy.
(Don't forget that you can apply to FNL for a grant at any time - see www.fnl.org.uk).

Donated by @thefnl.bsky.social from the BlavatnikHonresfieldLibrary. It’s wonderful to have been able to return these manuscripts home to where they were created - to Abbotsford, Bronte Parsonage Museum, Burns Birthplace Museum, Jane Austen's House among very many others.
