I did environmental work out there during the boom. It was nuts. Coworkers were finding bags of coke on highway shoulders. Fresh sushi flown in twice a day. Bars were roaring.

Not sure why this is a study. None of this is new. To your question, they do answer that they erode due to land use changes. Both too much and too little water in a system will accelerate erosion. Intact systems will have lateral migration of something like 1in/ 100yrs. I've seen up to 5ft/yr.
