We defend and promote free speech for all Americans in our courtrooms, on our campuses, and in our culture.
Gallaudet can’t compel conformity without undermining its own existing commitments to free speech.

FIRE calls on the university to rescind these restrictions and restore students’ full expressive and associational rights.

This serves as a warning to other universities who have sought to punish faculty for similar comments: the law is not on your side.

Faculty don’t lose their right to speak about matters of public interest simply because they work for a public university.

ASU’s apparent restriction does the opposite, flying in the face of the First Amendment.

FIRE demands that Angelo State University clarify whether the restriction exists—and if so, scrap it immediately.

The “Black 2 School Block Party” was open to all — just like Mizzou’s very own Black cultural programs and courses.

Free expression for all can’t mean free expression for only some. Mizzou must cut the hypocrisy and realign its commitment to the First Amendment on its campuses.

FIRE will continue to call on private institutions to stand up for their rights — no matter who is in office.

As we wrote to the Supreme Court back in Feb. 2024, when the government jawbones private platforms into silencing speech, it violates the First Amendment.

The First Amendment protects public university faculty when they speak as citizens on matters of public concern. Faculty don’t lose their rights simply because politicians demand it.

USD’s actions violate the Constitution.

5/ Now, as ever, students, faculty, administrators, and alumni must stand firm on the First Amendment.

FIRE will be here — holding the line, and holding institutions accountable when they don’t.

You can’t fire your way to free speech
Punishing speech after Kirk’s assassination doesn’t protect free expression — it erodes it.

3/ Over the past week, FIRE has already reviewed or intervened in dozens of such cases, and the number continues to grow. Faculty and students facing discipline for protected speech are not alone.

2/ The murder of Charlie Kirk has sent a jolt through American life — especially on campus, where ideas are meant to be challenged, not assassinated.

This fraught moment may tempt censorship of protected speech, but we cannot let that happen.
