Bose headphones are overrated.
That is not how the internet works.

Harris was pushed towards a position of restructuring ICE during the 2020 primary and it was a boat anchor on her candidacy.
April 11, 2025 at 2:39 PM
I think the people who said taking wildly unpopular positions like abolish ICE would lead to terrible people winning the election and doing terrible stuff are the ones who were vindicated here.

I’m not saying they aren’t idiots. I’m just saying they are consistent.

It’s all of them.

Correct
April 2, 2025 at 10:32 PM
Incorrect. All rap songs should begging by stating who you are and what you are here to say, and then clarify that this will continue at least until the break of day.
April 2, 2025 at 10:26 PM
No, you misunderstand, not 100k people per year that make claims. Like 100k total eligible people in the whole world at any time. Like you don't have to be Solzhenitsyn, but you should be at most two rungs down from that. Otherwise the whole population of any failed state would qualify.
April 2, 2025 at 8:21 PM
I get this, I think the disconnect is the bar for asylum. I would expect it to be extraordinary relief that maybe 100,000 people in the whole world would qualify for (political dissidents, religious leaders, etc.). Everyone else would go through standard process.
April 2, 2025 at 8:03 PM
I just think in most lay people's minds asylum is like "I led a failed coup against a dictator and need to escape a death squad" not "I find myself in a tough part of the world and want to skip the line for the standard legal immigration process"
April 2, 2025 at 7:56 PM
But that is like the worst possible result. You end up having people in the country who can't work legally and get shunted into a labor black market. The whole system is just terribly designed. Should file for asylum and have your case adjudicated before you arrive unless in imminent danger.
April 2, 2025 at 7:50 PM
I think there is an interesting disconnect between what laymen would consider asylum worthy persecution ("I am a member of resistance or a minority religion, etc. and subject to political state violence") vs what immigration law folks would: "I might get kidnapped by criminals because I have money"
April 2, 2025 at 7:45 PM
I guess the thing I find surprising is that the showing is "credible fear" vs "credible imminent fear". I would think you would need to be in danger where you are entering from, which in the case of entry from Mexico or Canada would be like a vanishingly small number.
April 2, 2025 at 7:22 PM
For the record I am in favor of massively expanding legal immigration, but this asylum loophole seems like it was either intentionally or negligently designed to undermine the whole system.
April 2, 2025 at 7:12 PM
I understand that is how the system works, what I am asking is how in the world did that come to be the actual system. It seems obviously vulnerable to being overwhelmed by spurious claims. You would think you would have to make a very compelling showing of imminent danger at the time of entry.
April 2, 2025 at 7:10 PM
The deportation without process is just evil, but how did we end up with this system where you can gain entry so easily without papers? Like if I showed up at the German border without a passport wouldn't they just send me away?

Its no Gleaming the Cube, but the botanical garden scene is straight fire.

While totally wrong, their shutting down the research arm is not inconsistent with the idea that in all cases the government is much worse than the private sector would be. They see the research stuff as a wasteful make work jobs programs for their opponents constituency. Evil but consistent
April 2, 2025 at 4:00 PM
No actual Yglesias admirer would complain about the typos. This is like saying you are a Prince fan but he should spell check his song titles because they use “2” and “4” instead of to and for.
April 2, 2025 at 3:52 PM
This would be a reasonable type of reform. What they are doing is targeted at going full Wild West all snake oil allowed all the time.
April 2, 2025 at 3:38 PM
I don’t agree with this but I think the theory of the case is that if you break the FDA it forces congress to remove all drug regulation and the free market will in the long term be more efficient in delivering new drugs.

Not taking any chances with the tank!
April 2, 2025 at 12:44 AM
That’s definitely not how it would work. The succession act doesn’t set qualifications for speaker.
April 1, 2025 at 6:44 PM
That’s why it’s says “attained the age of 35” and not “has celebrated 35 birthdays”. The 22 amendment very specifically bans being elected more than twice, not serving. If a two time president was later elected Speaker and there was a succession incident, they would not be skipped.
