So, I figured the cane would take longer to finish. And it's possible it still fails from how I heated it. But I think it's finished. Now I basically just use it and see if it breaks. I'll make another post later with all the photos start to finish.

First fire of the cane. It's possible I'll crack it right open. This is a new thing for me so we'll see how the next charring goes.

This was my dad's knife. An old department store type knife. Probably 25 years old or more. The handle had become loose. Though I'm not a skilled wood worker yet I was able to give it some new life at least. The dark wood through the front is a sliver of the original handle flanked by purple heart.
