My theory of why *that*? Is the ever swelling RYM / Fantanto / Reddit memewave coming back ashore to p4k island.

reminds me of this quote from a Stephen Malkmus interview about music, pose and self esteem

Nick Moran *and* Luke Haines?! Oh, we're talking Fake 00s, baby!

I've not seen that, what kind of aesthetic is that?

I think there was a fake 00s as well. The No Logo, Kid A, anti-globalisation era which got wiped off the board by big things from New York (9/11, The Strokes, electroclash)

Suede are often seen as the first Britpop - real 90s - band but their mk1 incarnation has more in common with Shakespears Sister than with what came next. They also had a line into the Derek Jarman queer art scene which feels like the antithesis of where things ended up.

Amelia Dimoldenberg's Chicken Shop Dates, KSI, Andrew Tate.

Think that layer upon layer of detail were very much a key part of Bowie's working post Tin Machine. Chris has probably written about it, IIRC there was a great discussion on @albumtoalbum.bsky.social with @leahkardos.bsky.social about the sheer layers of stuff Bowie layered into The Next Day.

This really sounds like Art / Be My God, the two "baggy" Suede songs the band had deleted before The Drowners came out. Niche.

"Look on the bright side, last time we had three years of a dead Labour government walking we got dubstep, grime, electrohouse and thriving online music communities!"

The best way to sample Tin Machine I is via the 9 song video promo which makes it seem a bit more exciting than it actually is: youtu.be/3H0hS1lxq4I?...

I'm kind of obsessed with Goodbye Mr Ed from Tin Machine II. Here's a quick rundown of my fav Bowie deepcuts from another social media platform ⤵️

Not sure what's gone on here, but my order was withdrawn and refunded.

It feels like that whole strata of Pitchfork music started middle aged. The National and War on Drugs were making mature comeback albums without a come to be back from.

He secretly did it with the Buddha of Surbubia soundtrack, which is an almost ambient autobiography, and more loudly made a "big important statement" about race with Black Tie White Noise feat Al B. Sure!

PJ Harvey's Let England Shake I think really fit the bill here, and all those later era Nick Cave albums that sort of blur into one.

On second viewing I've found it a lot less egregious as I did on first watch. The run of episodes are a bit like that other cultural landmark of 1991 Tin Machine II - an auteur feeling the backlash of giving too much creative control to poorly chosen collaborators.

Sign of the Times by The Belle Stars really *feels* like a Christmas song to me. Maybe it just has similar synths to Christmas Wrapping?
