Sterling returns to town after everyone presumed he died trying to go after the witch.

Reverend Pryce was the first to notice him, and he stood rigid. “Inquisitor Sterling?” “Aye.” Sterling dipped his head respectfully. “I have returned from my task.” “You look terrible, Inquisitor.” One of the elders watched him with a frown. “Had a terrible run-in with that blasted witch, I see.” “Quite terrible.” He grimaced when holding up the necklace. “I barely escaped with my life. I had to take drastic measures to ensure I finished the job.” Reverend Pryce squinted at the jewellery. He approached. “What is this?” “Proof. The witch was wearing this.” “I asked for her head, Inquisitor,” he frowned. Theodore felt his hair prickle at the back of his neck. The people of Eden Hollow had to have known that the witch was a man. After all the encounters and witness testimonies, as well as what he knew from the minister’s letter. Yet they were the ones that let Sterling believe falsely that Elias was a woman. He knew how wretchedly painful it was to have people not properly address him as a man. The idea of keeping this up, even if it is just to preserve that he knew nothing more about the witch that how it felt to kill him, had his stomach twisting in knots.

Young Prince Lucian is slowly recovering from a pretty bad concussion.
I sat there alone for some time, looking around my room. I did not have the urge to rise yet. I was afraid to. If the room was swaying from this posture, trying to stand and walk seemed like torture. I could try it again another time. There was a book at my bedside. One of Heinrich the Fourth’s. It was the one Maximus and I had paused in reading the night before… whatever had happened to me. I went to pick it up and open it, but trying to focus on the words stung my eyes. I was seeing two versions of the script overlapping each other, and I immediately grew malaise. I tossed the book aside in dismay. A light knock came a few moments later, with Maximus entering to bring me my meal. “Good to see you still conscious, Your Highness.” “It hurt to try and read my book,” I replied, holding my head again. “Will these pains in my head ever stop?” “It is hard to say, Your Highness.” He set the tray down on my lap. “But any progress is good progress. Surely, you will recover better now.” Eating was not too difficult, at least. I could hold utensils and sip from my cup, even though my hands had a slight tremor. I could handle it.

The moment that Elias decided to spare Sterling's life in WitchXHunter WIP
Context: he's not allowed to touch iron (blood and burns cw)
Elias worried at his lower lip with his teeth. He swore to himself that he could never fall prey again, nevermore extend a hand to a human soul. So, why was he still hesitating? His rage cooled to smouldering cinders. If this wound was not taken care of, he would be dead within the hour. If he touched even the hilt of the sword, however, he could burn his hands from the proximity. Death should be the only solution, but mercy steadied his hand. “Mother, forgive me,” he gasped, shaking his head. “I can’t do it.” He reached forward, grasping the hilt. It was broiling to the touch, forcing him to retract his hands with a sharp hiss. He could not be able to heal himself until he was well enough away from these wards. This risk had better be worth it. Elias whimpered when clutching the hilt again. His skin sizzled, the sear excruciating. It meant that he could not do this with as much care as he would like. Calling upon the surrounding oaks to give him strength, he pulled, and pulled. Blisters bloomed on his palms by the time he extracted the blade. There was no response from the man, which was a terrible sign. He threw the blade as far away from him as he could, his hands still burning when he knelt before the man. This would not be a quick fix. Perhaps, it would take weeks before a wound as grave as this could fully heal, and that was with his full potential. In his weakened state, it could take longer. Not for the first time, he supposed, he muttered to himself, “Why am I doing this?”

“You will never know peace again.” My eyes narrowed. The path that Iantinus himself led me on already ensured that for me. But I couldn’t let it go. It was practically melded to my hand, no matter how many times I tried to throw it. That left me with only one option. Only giving myself one deep breath to prepare myself, I thrust my entire arm into the fire. “Tobias!” “Don’t touch me!” I warned him with a pained bellow, halting him from trying to drag me away. “He won’t let me throw it. This is the only way!” I fought through the horrible pain. I fought the urge to draw my hand back, not until I knew for sure that the fire had caught it. I squeezed my eyes shut, feeling the flames consume my hand, up my forearm. It started to singe my eyelashes and the hairs on my jaw from how close I was. My own cries of pain paled in comparison to the most horrible screams I ever heard in my life. Iantinus’ voice in agony. To this day, there isn’t a time when I don’t recall the sound. “What have you done?” He continued to scream, the longer that my arm burned, but I held fast. I lost track of time. Did a minute pass? Five? Ten? Perhaps longer. But I couldn’t let it go. I held on until at last my ears no longer rang and my skull was left alone. Then, I knew that The Black Book was finally destroyed. The pain was too terrible to ignore once I finally drew back. My throat burned as I wailed, everything slamming into me all at once as I faintly heard Ewan frantically calling for Alasdair.

He bit down on his lip when Tristan pulled out. He shuddered from the loss, his body melting into the grass. He could barely catch his breath. “Avery…” Tristan slowly turned him onto his back. Avery smiled up at his lover, leaning up to kiss him. As their lips met, Tristan held him in a tight embrace. It soothed any aches and chills. “My love,” Avery whispered, reaching up to stroke some of Tristan’s sweaty hair out of his face. “Tristan.” They kissed each other again, slower, deeper. Avery could fall asleep under him. He parted his lips and welcomed the feeling of his tongue against his. As the kiss broke, he found himself glancing up. His breath caught as he grinned. “Tristan, the sky. Look.” His smile widened when Tristan looked. Together they saw how dusk began to paint the sky in rosy pinks and violets. Some of the stars began to twinkle, and Avery could barely keep his eyes dry. “Have you ever seen anything so beautiful in your entire life?” he whispered. “Isn’t it perfect?” He felt Tristan’s smile against his neck as he pressed tender kisses. Tristan held him close, keeping him warm. “Aye. It is.”

In the enemies portion of the enemies to lovers plot, Theodore tries to attack Elias from behind while he’s preparing dinner. It doesn’t work.
His ear twitched when he heard a rustling behind him. With his bloodied knife in a tight grip, he whipped around. His instincts were correct. Theodore was upon him with that iron dagger again. Just as Elias was pinned to the table, the hunter pressed the dagger against his neck. Elias let out a pained cry, the metal searing into his skin. He was too weak to get Theodore off him, not on his own. He had just enough room to hold his own knife up to his throat, trying to breathe through the burning pain. “You are too trusting, witch,” muttered the hunter. “And you are a fucking beast.” Elias felt nausea building in his belly when he sent forth a billowing gust. “Did you really think that would work?” Theodore was knocked back, and he clutched his wound. It was still healed enough. For now. “I will not try it again,” he grumbled. “How am I supposed to believe you? Take your blasted iron out of my hovel.” He gestured towards the entrance with his knife. “Now.” “Hell will freeze over before I do that.” “Very well.” Elias did not fully reverse his healing this time. He did, however, lift a hand to threaten it. Regardless, Theodore flinched. “Fine, fine.”

Avery watched him go into a hut not too far off from the workshop. Unlike his parents, Tristan lived close to his work and was well engrossed in the town’s gossip and politics. While waiting, Avery fidgeted with the coin pouch again. He could not stay out in the open too long. He slowly approached the hut, standing in the doorway. He watched Tristan not just grab his hat but also be in the middle of changing his shirt. Avery gulped once catching a glimpse of the man’s broad chest. Tristan glanced over, giving him a teasing smile. “Could not resist?” Avery shook his head. “Tristan?” His voice trembled as he moved closer. He set the pouch down at Tristan’s bedside. “I missed you.” To his relief, Tristan smiled. He reached out, gentle when stroking his cheek. “I missed you too.” Avery breathed out a sigh as he leaned up, his eyes fluttering closed. Tristan was tender when kissing his lips, holding his face and caressing it with gentle fingers.

Elias frowned. “It happens when I use too much magic at once.” He left out that it was a considerably new development. “It can drain me of my energy.” “What?” He glanced over incredulously. “Why would it drain you? Do you not get your magic from the blood of infants? Deals with evil spirits?” Elias stared at him, his brows rising. “I have never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life.” He breathed out a speechless little laugh. “My magic comes from nature. It comes from my connection with Mother Earth. I do not commune with ‘evil spirits,’ as you call them.” “Well, it is not a baseless claim.” Theodore still had this scrutinous glare on his face. With each second, Elias was certain that he would kill him if he closed his eyes for too long. “Several different witches I have hunted got their magic that way,” he continued. “There was a town a hundred miles south from here where their children were going missing. It would happen during different moon phases. It turned out that their local apothecary had her own coven that sacrificed these children to bolster their power.” Elias squinted. “And you have seen these witches murdering children as sacrifices?” “With mine own eyes,” Theodore muttered. “And that is not even the worst inquest I have ever done.”

Elias’ introduction in WitchXHunter WIP is the most whimsical cozy thing I have written in recent years lol This is the sweetest bit so far.
The summer solstice was near. Elias had but days to prepare. But the skies were clear, the breeze was warm, and the trees’ boughs brought a verdant light to the clearing. It was a beautiful day to forage. A little chirrup from his window made him pause while he was dressing for the day. He grinned at the sight of a light brown cat with dark stripes depicting their own forest from her head down to her tail. He reached out to stroke her head, staring into amber eyes. “Good morning to you too, Sage,” he hummed. “I suppose, you would like to come with me.” He dressed in his lighter robes, stepping out from his hovel. He had foregone his sandals to feel the soil beneath his feet. Sage followed right beside him, her steps light across the ground. Taking a deep breath of the clean air, a blissful smile bloomed on his lips. Mother Earth was kind to him, indeed. He brought his basket with him, taking a slow stride towards the berry bushes. When the birds sang to him, he whistled back his own tune. Back and forth they went, and Elias could not help but laugh.

Angels Before Man by Rafael Nicolás is hands down one of my FAVORITE books of all time. I can talk about everything I love about it for HOURS.
What I love the most however is that Lucifer’s story is the perfect example of a negative character arc, hands down. Absolutely well done.

The witch’s beauty could never be compared. It was blasphemous, for Sterling fancied seeing his body presented on an altar. It was that thought that made him lower his hand. His fingers ghosted between his legs, the touch almost foreign after years of not bothering. It was not for lack of trying, but he simply could not bring himself to find pleasure since… He shivered when finding that his cock was already fattening up between his fingers, stirred by the mere whisper of a touch and his damned fantasy. He pressed his head back against the wall, his lips parted on a sigh while he stroked himself. He pictured the witch’s body splayed out on that pallet bed of his, his legs parted and his voice wanton. He could take those silver locks between his fingers, wondering how soft they were. He could have him completely surrender under his touch. Sterling dropped the cloth he was using to clean himself in favour of covering his mouth. His hips rutted into his hand all the while. He lost his resistance, perhaps in the exact same moment the witch put his spell on him. What would he taste like? How would he look with Sterling’s cock in his mouth? How much could he take from this demon before he would break? This blasted tempter. This wicked thing. Sterling was weak, vulnerable. What would his family think of him now?

After another attempt to finish his healing, Elias was growing weak once more. He had a hard time meeting his eye, doing what he could to maintain some level of control. Theodore did not flinch as much this time, though he was still giving him a frown. “I did not expect this.” “What?” He was ready for another insulting jab. “I didn’t expect your magic to feel warm.” His fingers twitched in his confusion, and he glanced at his face. “You should watch it work sometime. Does it feel like your skin is being stitched back together?” Theodore frowned. “A little, but with no needle or sutures.” Elias hummed. “Well, now you are fixed up for the next fortnight. Any discomfort?” “Actually, no. I feel fine.” “Good.” He smiled and stepped back. “See? Proof that not all witches have wicked intentions.” That curious look on Theodore’s face quickly vanished. He had a stern frown once more. “I would not go that far.” Elias blanched, wringing his hands together. “Right. On your way, then. Until the next visit.”

Sterling's final moments before going unconscious after falling on his own sword (literally) in WitchXHunter WIP
(Spoiler alert, he's not dead!)
His foot got snagged by an upturned root. Sterling tripped hard, falling forward. His grip was too tight on his sword, so when he tried to catch himself— He never expected being stabbed through the abdomen to feel so cold. He was skewered, narrowly missing his spine. His breath stuttered, and he collapsed on his side. He could not move. If he tried to take the blade out, he would die. Perhaps he was already dying. The sweat was difficult to ignore, and his limbs were growing cold. He must have hit an organ, or two. When he lifted his hand from his gut, it was covered with his own blood. “Shit.” He gritted his teeth, reaching towards his belt. “Shit.” His symbol was gone. In his hand instead was the trinket. He felt the little branches, remiss that they were going to be stained. He clutched it in his hand. All he could do was try to make peace with his fate. Hopefully, the Father would be merciful despite failing in his mission. Perhaps there would still be a place for him in His house. As his vision darkened around the edges, blurred from the effort, he made out the shape of a person stepping towards him. Their movements were just as methodical as his own were just moments ago. But before he could call out to them, he fell limp and knew nothing more.

The action made him let out a pained whimper, but still he pressed forward, crouching in front of him. “Perhaps, it is lucky—or perhaps unlucky—that you hit nothing vital,” the witch muttered. “Canst thou sit up?” “Don’t touch me, witch,” Sterling snapped through gritted teeth. The witch tutted. “Don’t be an idiot.” He reached out without hesitation, pressing a hand right on Sterling’s wound. “If you want this wound to close, you will let me work.”

“I suppose, you are guarding our charge, then,” the witch teased with a lilting tone. There was a hint of a smile to his voice. “Worry not. All will be well.” Sterling bunched himself back, hiding himself away from the witch’s sight. “Hm.” It was a soft sound, but Sterling’s hackles rose. Right when the witch darkened the doorway, he took his dagger and swung hard towards one of the witch’s legs. Before he could make contact, a strong gust of wind shoved him backward. He fell on top of a basket, the woven straw biting into his back. He tried to rise, his legs wobbling, but he was thrust to the side from another strong gust. When he could see straight, the witch stood in the centre of the hovel, his eyes hard and his arms steady. He was controlling the wind with mere gestures. “I beg of thee not to try again,” the witch muttered, his voice cold. “Do not attempt a bargain with me.” Sterling gritted his teeth, using all his strength to lunge forward. He heard a high cry as he slashed the dagger across the witch’s side, and he clutched the hilt tight while delivering a swift kick to his thigh. As the witch stumbled, holding tight to his wound, a sudden fire flashed in his eyes. Sterling flinched back as dozens of vines thrust out from one of the witch’s palms. He could only cut through so many before he was overwhelmed. One of them wrapped tight around his armed wrist, squeezing tighter and tighter until he was forced to drop the dagger. “You know not what you are trifling with, hunter.” The witch’s voice was frigid, contrasting his roiling rage. “Do not try again.”
