Also just wanna caveat in here: obviously if you're doing it for a good cause and you feel like it's worthwhile - like for a charity or a community project, then sure. Do that free gig. Just don't do it to line the pockets of private interests.

You are doing a job. You are providing entertainment that takes time, skill and money to perfect. You pay for the lessons, the practise space, the instrument maintenence and the travel to every gig you play. You *deserve* to be paid for your time.

Also BANDS: For the love of christ stop working for free. I know you want to get yourself out there and folks don't want to pay for an act they don't know about, but pleeeaaasse. For the sake of everyone else in this industry, at a certain point you gotta demand to be paid!

And ask yourself this: if your gut reaction is "well I'm not getting paid either!" then also start asking why??
Why are you not getting paid? The bar staff are getting paid. The venue owner is getting paid. The sound guy is getting paid.
EVERYONE - bands included - should be getting paid. Period.
