When TF did the fed govt start deciding how much of deceased employee's pensions the spouse deserves? There is no official formula used to calculate the amount. I was told the fed will decide how much I get.

My husband passed away this last Monday, April 21. There is no way I can pay the mortgage, and the rest of the bills on my SS check. It could take months for the govt to process death benefits, and apparently they are allowed to award me as much of his pension as they want now.
