I feel as though no one in charge has considered the possibility that allowing fan play in that imagination space because things don't exist, is sometimes even cooler and more enfranchising than it being given to you directly. :-/

Yeah, this has nothing to do with conspiratorial bags of money being thrown at him. He either works there and gets to design the cards they want him to, probably at a reasonable salary, or they'll pay someone else to do it. That he is historically one of the best to have done it isn't important.
