These storms get human names because there was a meteorologist many years ago who decided to name them after politicians he didn’t like, so he could associate the destructive effects of the storms with those people. I think we continue it because we’ll remember them if they’re named and not numbered

Yep. And those were so incredibly bad, and so many people suffered so badly, that having those in recent memory allowed people to rethink government intervention and paved the ways for FDR’s policies to steward us through the Great Depression.
