things are going very well this figure is fine

Over 70% of Earth's ecoregions have yet to be sampled for arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

By analyzing eDNA sample locations, we found most soils are unsampled. Drylands are especially overlooked despite covering almost 1/3 of the Earth's terrestrial land.

In the field, one site was pressed against the border wall, and field work felt different, divided.

Border agents passed by as the wall towered. Scientists need to now, more than ever, need to remain vocal and active in protecting our fields and international collaboration.

Since it’s a protected site, we restricted our sampling. An NPS archaeologist joined us, identifying artifacts in the field and guiding us to where we could safely sample these drylands.

Some of the longest-living cacti on Earth grow in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

We sampled (many) soils, what mycorrhizal fungi will we find?

The Sonoran Desert is one of youngest deserts on Earth - 9,000 years old.

Called the “greenest desert”, we know virtually nothing about the soil microbiome here.

We are sampling soils to uncover the mycorrhizal communities that help support such unexpected plant diversity.

We built a robot to track how plants and fungi exchange resources with remarkable efficiency.

Happy to have contributed to this recent research in Nature, led by Loreto Oyarte Galvez and Corentin Bistot (cbisot.bsky.social)

How does soil tell time? Last summer, together with Margerita Soldati, we created "microbial clocks" using Winogradsky columns in the Scottish Highlands. These microbial communities are still ticking, supported by the Mondriaan Fonds. margheritasoldati.com

I could stare at these root systems for hours. Here Lupinus albus has short-thick cluster roots adapted to phosphorus uptake.

More to come on plant-microbe symbiosis in next few months.

Excited to see the science community migrating to BlueSky, and will continue posting work on mapping soil biodiversity.

Video shows machine-learning predictions of mycorrhizal fungal diversity in Chile.

“When most people think of high biodiversity, they think of the tropics”.

It’s time we look underground, and especially in cities.

With @DIEZEIT I describe my work mapping mycorrhizal fungi and their role in global ecosystems. W/ @KiersToby and @Giulifungi
