On this day in 1775, the Continental Marines were founded in Philadelphia. Captain Samuel Nicholas was put in charge of raising the battalions and set up his recruiting headquarters at Tun Tavern, (pictured) which was located on Water Street by the Delaware River Waterfront in Philadelphia.
