Inspired by her elders’ stories and her own research , Bryant paints the history of nuclear testing at Maralinga, South Australia, between 1956 and 1963. She reminds us of the lingering after-effects of the bombs and the displacement still experienced by the survivors and their descendants. ‘I painted this on a silver platter,’ Bryant says, ‘because that’s how they served it. Whitefellas watching from a distance while Anangu ran.’ Under the gallery lights, this silver platter glimmers, in stark contrast to the black puyu or mist that is said to have moved across Country. Bryant’s commentary heavily implies that this is how the Australian Government served up country to the British: on a silver platter.
