Hmmn... I see it differently. The grey is where the subsoil is showing. Note any pathways of truck traffic and you will see that grey color. What you see as a black covering is actually water mixed with decaying organic material. Rain water runoff filled this pit along with truckloads of remains.

Upon closer inspection, these do appear to be Mass Graves. These are not piles, they are pits surrounded by fill. "Think of the Worst and It's Worse."

The corpses are ground up and limed at the Rendering Facility. Then they are transported to the Composting Facility where they are processed into fertilizer.

This looks like a legit composting operation. Except based on the evidence at the prison, they are most likely composting the bodies that are processed at the Rendering Facility:
