A series of posts, to better understand the risk of vector-borne (bug) diseases. We are grateful to the Hattiesburg Clinic for their work in infectious disease including our work in community-based education.

A report from Live Science suggests a potential avenue to stem malaria by reducing carriers - www.livescience.com/health/virus.... This is the type of research that must continue, but is now threatened with cuts at our leading research institutions.
Drug makes blood lethal to disease-spreading mosquitoes
Nitisinone, a drug that is already used to treat two genetic diseases, could be repurposed to control the spread of malaria, according to new research.

News reports citing a higher concern about transmissions of bird flu. Cattle infections are being reported as H5N1 (a subtype of influenza A virus). For clarification, what is being reported are new genotypes meaning it is a variation in the gene composition, called B3.13 and D1.1.

The number of mosquitoes are thought to be between 110 trillion and over a quadrillion mosquitoes. That's only one type of vector, not including ticks and many others. Integrated control is important, BUT, vaccine development must continue with federal funding support for this expanding plague.

Bird Flu / Influenza is a vector disease that is transmissible.
February 5, 2025, NPR is reporting a new strain of the previously reported H5N1 Bird Flu influenza. D1.1 genotype is a distinct genetic lineage and is infecting dairy cattle over the last year. www.npr.org/sections/sho...
A new type of bird flu has been found in dairy cows in Nevada
The strain of bird flu is distinct from what has previously been found in dairy cattle. The finding means the virus has again spilled over from birds to cows, and it raises some worrying questions.

The Bug Campaign Inc. seeks to stem the advance of vector-borne diseases and provides 'lay' but researched information. These infectious diseases are most commonly known by transmitting pathogens from 'bugs' to humans but can also infect target creatures, vegetation, marine life and more.
