Yeah, I think one of the reasons Craig has been so successful in the role is just how obviously he really despises Bond as a person.

I am not someone who subscribes to the existence of many hard binaries, but Who/Bond is one of them. I reckon an actor needs to pick one - the definitive suave alcoholic government murder misogynist or the definitive woke manic pixie space hobo. You can't have both.

(I don't think that *is* what Alex is advocating for, but it is the thing that I'm arguing against)

Yeah, this is the thing I react to. All too often a story of epic bureaucratic mishandling, devastatingly under-resourced departments or outright malpractice will begin, "Now, obviously I'm ever so grateful for the NHS..."
No! You don't have to be! It's yours and you need it to work well!

Those enemies will eat either way. Pretending the BBC and NHS are above reproach is not going to stop the rightwing press (or the BBC's appeasement of them), or Streeting's ongoing effort to privatise and enshitify the NHS. It's not enough to defend them as they stand, we need to demand more.

See, with Star Wars I think there's fun in the game of trying to make it all fit. But Star Wars is a setting, rife with different perspectives and stories. Bond is a story we only see through the eyes of Bond *right now*.

Just noticed the accidental pronoun in here. A typo? Or an idea yearning to find its way into the world?

Nah, I reckon that's still the same problem. Bond is a specific character, not just a production line of misogynist alcoholics who look good in a tuxedo. You just have to let go of the idea there being any consistent reality across the films.

This is it isn't it? They want to make a shared universe and a shared universe requires a shared history, it can't be reset every five minutes.
But has James Bond ever struck you as a person who would *share* a universe?

Barbara Broccoli called it for what it is, went "fuck this", took her cheque, and sailed into the sunset.

See I think even Reboot is too strong a phrase. You still had Dench, the old car, the failed attempt at a Connery cameo. It's just that Bond as a whole has basically zero object permanence. The moment something is out of frame there is no way of knowing whether it has still happened or not.

Well yeah, but that's just the kind of solid worldbuilding and attention to detail that we expect from the Mario franchise.

The answer to that question, and I think it all hinges on this, is "the actor, Sean Connery".

You're being very cruel to someone who has *really* unfortunate luck with women named Theresa, or other names.

Even that old theory is trying to impose a meaning and order on events that just isn't actually there. They're all Bond because they are all the same guy, not just "a type of guy". James Bond is able to do the thing she does because it's James Bond doing it.

Excellent point.
Answer A: Because this actually quite sloppy work and I don't know Bond that well, this is mainly just based on the order of the books.
Answer B: There's bound to be a few discontinuities and it's not like he doesn't have other dead loves of his life to put flowers down for by then.

M, as played by Judi Dench, meets James Bond, tell him he's a fossil from an outdated era, then later expresses concerns about what a young rebellious firebrand he is during his first real mission. It's fine!

Just in case you need some credentials for that biggest continuity wanker claim, here is the correct chronological viewing order for the James Bond movies.
