no shade to Grapes of Wrath, exactly, but i find that people this interested in the manifesto-ness of that book are always happy to learn about Whose Names Are Unknown by Sanora Babb (an actual communist whose contemporaneous field notes were used by Steinbeck, causing her book to be shelved)
