You’re invited to hold and squeeze Evans’ large fabric pieces hung on the walls. There are smaller textile sculptures scented with lavender, that you can pick up and smell, and are also available to purchase from the Gallery and take away with you.

Evans is interested in the hierarchies of craft and labour, and how textile methods of working are seen as more feminine, and valued less than other art forms like paintings or sculptures. She likes to subvert this thinking by creating large-scale, tactile fabric pieces, designed interacted with.

In the space, you can also create your own postcard to share your own messages and ideas of freedom, which you can leave as part of the exhibition or take away with you.

In honour of Liverpool’s dockworkers, their manifesto uses signal code, a system developed to communicate across language through the use of flags and light signals. Inspired by this, they devised their own code which has been printed onto a large banner - can you work out what the message is?

Over the summer, Lou worked with children from St Vincent de Paul Catholic Primary School in L1 to explore what freedom means to them. Together they created a manifesto to share the children’s wishes for freedom, displayed in her new Bluecoat exhibition.

You might remember his 2022 Bluecoat installation ‘OK! Cherub!’, which featured a giant yellow worm representing Rest, a group of green frogspawn representing Community and a giant cartoon arm representing Connection.

We'd like to express our gratitude to outgoing chair Peter Mearns, who is stepping down after nine years in service. His achievements as Chair include the transformative refurbishment of the 'Hub', and the securing of funds for the redevelopment of the Bistro into an exciting new events space.
