Yeah it takes some time, but it's not that bad. It might take an hour or two at most. It might vary with your software. Oh and make sure the animations for everything are "baked in" and not calculated while rendering. Or you might end up with different animations between renders.

I used a bit of MMD. (Miku Miku Dance, some Japanese model animation software, I'm sure you heard of it.) It has a plug in to generate equirectangular videos. I basically has to render the same animation 5 times for each eye with a slight offset for each eye.

This is fucked up. Over here in Canada, when women under 50 ask for a breast exam, doctors tell them they're too young. We've had several friends who were diagnosed with breast cancer in their 20's and 30's. Breast exams need to happen earlier. I wish your sister well and hope she recovers.
