(Northern shoveler)
Photo of a northern shoveler duck swimming on a softly rippling pond. It gets its name from the spatulate bill that is wider than the average duck's. It has obvious rakers on the sides that help strain out food from the water it dabbles in. This is a male, with greenish head feathers, white-margined black back feathers, and brown sides. Near the end of the wings is a splash of teal, which is usually only visible when the bird is in flght.

A red-winged blackbird is perched on a rough-hewn wood railing, preening. The photo shows the bird holding the front edge of its wing in its mouth as it starts to stroke the wing from top to tip. The bird is all black (feathers, bill, and legs), except for a red and yellow patch near the shoulder, right where the bird's beak is in the moment.
