so as not to make this whole thing a game design rant (sorry!), i have included an actual blurb about the power rangers game i’m in lol

feel free to lmk if u have more questions. i always love yapping

the game is set in a fictional Veil Cove, Oregon and the “season” is themed after fantasy dragons, so each ranger has a dragon motif from various cultures. there’s four players (including myself), using the ranger “roles” (classes, split by color, which is… a choice). i play Emily, who’s orange, and there’s Dante as blue (mechanically uses the purple role), Virgil as pink, and Thistle as yellow. their mentor is a bookshop owner they know, named Manny, who was purple until he gave up his powers for the time being to split the magic (so to speak) with the rest of the team we’re playing our 3rd episode/session soon, and we’re having fun! (don’t let my game design rant fool u, lol, i can criticize the shit out of a game system and still have fun playing it) the way character creation works is genuinely interesting and i do like it. you choose an Origin (kinda like an archetype) that gives you a feature (Emily’s is Kind, and she “knows a guy” - can borrow a skill that the team needs once a day from the fact that she’s so sweet that she’d feasibly know everyone in town), and then you can have up to 3 Influences (like backgrounds) that informed how you are as a person (Emily’s are Survivor, Student, and Beloved). influences are like… they build the person you are now and can impose “hang-ups” (drawbacks) on your character while also giving you benefits. an example would be Emily’s Student influence, where she can gain an advantage on skills related to her area of study but gets drawbacks if she attempts to use said area of study when it’s not applicable. the system uses Strength, Speed, Smarts, Social and splits skills up under those categories. i do like that and find it somewhat refreshing but sometimes character creation is not the most user friendly. and then i just do not really like that the roles are based on colors rather than mechanics (i.e. the Red Ranger is a paladin noble leader type, the Blue is brainy and tech based, Yellow is a speedy rogue type). RGS has a FAQ on their site that says you’re always free to make a ranger with a mechanical role that doesn’t match their cosmetic color… but like idk. i still think it’s too crunchy of a system!
