I am a social democrat and have never supported communism: it is based on an absurdly positive view of human nature so couldn't possibly work.

The carnation revolution was not a communist revolution (Putin using them is irrelevant). It's true they were in the vanguard of it but they were unable to seize power.

The April 25, _1974_ Revolution was a democratic revolution: a welcome return to fair and free elections. It was the Socialists who came to power with their version of social democracy in coalition with the more centrist CDS, not the communists.

I have never praised the ideology of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics - note not Communist republics).

That's 50 years. The communist peak was only about 21% in 1979. Their decline was slow but sure.

They never came second so far as I know.

The PCP (part of the CDU block) received just 2.91% of the vote last time.
